Should i get the x-wing first, or new componets?

I always go for new components first. Survivability climbs strait up if you have the best equipment that you can for your tier of interaction.

Depends on your playstyle.

I picked up components first, then got my ship, folowed by the skills, and lastly, the droid commands(when they were still bugged).

And just to note, I wasn't even flying a LongProbe, I was still in my standard Y-Wing.

Just for any Imps that might be reading, go componets first through tier II, at tier III train chassis first. With our super light mass you will not gain anything from training componets first in tier III, you won't be able to fit any of them in a ln. Get the interceptor for the extra mass and load it up with tier II components.

I took chassis first at Tier 3. Mostly because I wasn't flying a Y-Wing through tier 2, sticking with the z95 all the way through to Tier 3. The increased difficulty of the mobs in Tier 3 didn't sufficiently justify taking components. But the X-Wing offered a superior dogfighter than the previous ships, which is what most of the pilot tree is: dogfighting.

I know a couple of Rebels that did the same thing. While there's a big jump in component quality from level 5 to 7, it can be more than worth it to go for the X-Wing first if you've got a strong aversion to the Y-Wing, which is perfectly understandable.

Aversion to the Y-Wing? Perish the thought!

The Y-Wing can be a hazzard with the wrong engine in it. It can be quite a shock to manuverafter the nimble Z95 too. Right now I am busily stuffing mine with the heaviest componets that I can lay my hands on. It has 170K mass and I intend on using all of it.

I don't have an aversion to the LongPig, per se. I realize it has a role and just don't attempt to push it outside that role. When I had to disable a YT-1300 to complete a missionI took the LongPig and not my X-Wing, using the LongPig's greater defensive capability to withstand the hammering from the turrets while I took out it's components. But the LongPig is not well suited for a scrap with fighters, especially large numbers of them. Which is most of what is required from the piloting tree, fighting large numbers of fighters with occasional situations requiring a bomber's strength. I'll have a B-Wing and treat it similiarly as well.

IMO, the missions in the Tier 3 boxes don't necessarily require the lvl 6&7 components at the beginning of the tier. The greater firepower of a lvl 7 blasters is pretty much equal to the added blaster and maneuverability granted by the X-Wing.
