Thread: Pikeman/Ranger template?

Hello everyone,
I really doubt anyone remembers me, I used to post on this forum allot during the good ole days when there weren't any NS lances floating around making 50% of the server go pike.. I was a master pike for about 5 months, was even offered the correspondent position (as was half a dozen other people, you can tell who replied to the offer first).

About a month ago I finished my jedi grind (yay me), but anyways:

I'm looking for some advice. I miss my old pikeman days, and have considered taking up pike again. I hunt with a master rifleman, and I too am a master rifleman. We've been trying to kill elders/krayts, but have come to realize, finding krayts is very, very hard without a ranger, and fighting some of the nightsisters without kinetic damage is nearly impossible.

I'd like to take up pike again. I was considering some kind of a pikeman/ranger template. I have no interest in PVP'ing with my main, my primary goal is to be able to tank an elder or a krayt for my friend while we both deal damage.

I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to share there opinions on maintaining a high defensive Pikeman, while spending skill points on master scout/Ranger 0/0/3/0 ?

Right now I'm considering:
Master Brawler
Master Pike
Fencer 2/0/0/0 (+Melee Defense, a descent amount, something like +46)
Master Scout
Ranger 0/0/3/0

This leaves me with 1 skill point left, however after reading through several other peoples templates on this forum, I wonder if I'm still going to be lacking quite a bit in the defense department.. and it seems I might need medical skills, too =/

Anyways, thanks in advance for any opinion anyones willing to offer. And yes, I DO want to be a ranger, I wanted to stay ranger after I had grinded it during my jedi run, but dropped it for obvious reasons.

I can see the pikemen forums are as friendly as they used to be. -_-

Ahhwell.. since pikes never see love I guess I cant expect much lol

Master Ranger/Master Pike/Novice Medic works out just fine for me in all aspects. Don't expect too much from def stacking for high end PvE anyway, things like Nightsister Elders have such high to-hits that they won't miss noticable often even if you are at the cap for melee defense.

Im a master pike as well

Im looking at this template

master pike
ranger 0040
fencer 4020 (status and combat defenses)
novice medic

my biggest debate for myself is whether to take fencer defenses or tka meditation line... it makes sense for rangers to be able to be able resist/ or cure poison disease.

That seems like a good template, and i think you will have fun with it... i just cant bring myself to give up novice medic

I don't actively play my pikeman/ranger, but I have done this build myself (pretty sure he has novice medic thrown in). I don't PvP, so I can't comment on the effectiveness of this build there. They were just two professions that both interested me.

I am also working on Pikeman Ranger Template


Master Pikeman

Ranger - Tracking Line

Fencer 4-4-3-0 (for the defenses)


A huge reason for this is I wanted +115 Block from Pikeman, and +90 Dodge from Fencer. But now I am told that the Dodge from fencer will not kick in unless I have a Fencer Weapon equipped. If this is the case, I will be be doing 4-0-4-0 and use the points elsewhere.


Can anyone confirm whether or not Dodge will work with a Pike equipped? Thx

block will work when holding a piketype weapon

dodge will work when holding a fencer weapon


not vice versa or in combination,

Thank you everyone, this gives me some info I wasn't aware of.

Im not really concerned abuot NOT being hit by things like elders, I just want to reduce the damage as much as I can.

Block does it by half, armor of course reduces it further... food..


There any toher mods that FUNCTION with pike that will reduce damage? I figured master brawler because of intimidate 2.


Also, does anyone know if melee defense ONLY increases your ability to 'not' be hit? It has no effect on damage ?

I don't believe melee defense has anything to do with the damage you take, just how much you're missed.

Melee defense is about the only defense that will stack with pike, aside from state defenses which are of no use against elders currently. Intimidate is incredibly useful though. Constant intimidation is the single best thing you can do.

One question though. Have you found ranger to actually assist you in finding Krayts? I was a ranger for quite some time (on a separate server from pikeman), and once vehicles appeared I always found tracking to be fairly useless. It just seemed I could cover more ground with more accuracy driving around than relying on /areatrack, which half the time wouldn't show anything because the mobs hadn't spawned yet. I'm not trying to talk you out of ranger or anything, just curious if it's working better now.

Actually, yes, I have, you just need toknow WHERE to track at. Predominantly, south of the krayt graveyard usually works well.

North west corner of tatooine works well, too.. hard to fight what with all teh mountains though.


This isn't entirely accurate, either. Areatrack doesn't need the monster to be spawned to track it. IT tracks based on spawn flags. SW:G reduces lag by placing spawn flags across planets.. you come into range of the spawn flag, it spawns what its supposed to spawn, you leave range, it despawns it.

That's why when you use area track, it doesn't show ALL 5 of xxxx creature at the same spot.. though, admittedly, if its a wandering spawn, it can.


A tip for any aspiring CH's: You can actually force a baby to spawn by going in range/out of range of a spawn repeatedly that contains the monster you want as a baby. I learned that in beta heh, they never changed the spawn system so its always worked. Unless you DAMAGE the spawn (causing it to record to server) it just depops teh spawn then repops it, randomly with the proper mobs.
