Ok, I've been searching a bit on old postson this topic and found contradicting information, so I thought I'd ask about this again:
What is it that determines if a DoTfrom a weapon sticks on a foe?

Are you thinking of potency?
Potency = % chance of landing a DOT on a target
Strength = damage tick that a DOT does every 8 - 10s
Duration = how long a DOT lasts on a target before you have to land another one

yes, that is one of the versions I've seen. The other is that accuracy determines the hit (as some say you can still get it to stick often with very low potency if you're master and have much accuracy). They also say that potency is only used when deteriming how much cures a doc would require to remove the dot.
Not sure which one it is really.

My understanding was that potency determines your chance to stick the DOT. You'll only get a chance at sticking the DOT, of course, when you actually make contact. Your accuracy just determines how like you are to make contact in the first place.

The 'truth' seems to be a non constant property in this matter
Anyone who has actually done a more serious test?

no. But if you want to apply a dot, your first worry is to actualy hit you foe. Hence your accuracy will effect the "speed" of wich you will stick the dot. Every time you hit him the % chanse of sticking comes on to effect. If your fighting another pikeman or a swordsman you can apply the dot trough a def mod though ie if they block or counter attack it still have a chanse of sticking.
This dont work on dodging foes tho because "the dodge" makes you miss them completly.

A very unscientific test I did myself was: Igot two pikes, one with high potency, one with low, found and attacked a lair (i.e. all the same type mobs). The high potency stuck within the first hit or two, the low took several hits. My accuracy was the same with each weapon (i.e. no accuracy mods on either pike).

One other fun fact on DOTS: Even if your target has 100% resist to your DMG type, the DOT will still take effect if you hit them, even if you are doing ZERO DMG.
