Can someone please explain how block works? Does it only work vs. melee, or vs any attack?

Some say that our block skill shows up as a counter-attack in the combat spam, but I've yet to see it.

i see it as counter attack yea

i belive it is broke right now...we are counterattacking instead of blocking...this could be nice cause you get a free swing of your slowpolearm but is bad cause if you noticed over your head you see some damage roll off...cause you get hit then hit back...it does not show up in the combat spam(the ammount of damage) it just says ...%T hit you but you shrug it off and counterattack....we could probly tank better if we had block instead cause you would not get any damage...but your damage output would be lower cause you dont get a free hit...block works agains range and melee but right now you are doing counterattack against range attacks so they hit you but you dont hit them back cause they are out of range...see how that kinda sucks...hope this helped

i'm going master rifleman and picking up the defense tree of pikeman and wondering if anyone knows exactually what block protects from?
