Thread: Pike/defense stack vs. Pike/doctor

I know that there have been a few discussions about templates in the past, but I would like to ask a question anyway (I'm thick-headed that way :smileyvery-happy

I just got novice pikeman last night - wohoo! I am rebuilding from Commando/TKM so I still have TKM and I got master brawler. I was thinking of defense stacking with a mind to find some nice DoT pikes and skill tapes for pvp. After getting my butt kicked in the Genosian Bio Lab, I am thinking that it may be better to go Pike/Doctor than Pike/defense stack.

Could I get some opinions on defense stack vs. doctor as a backup to pike? I'm looking to be 60% pvp, 40% pve.

Thanks in advance

Master Pike/Doc is a lot of fun in pve, I wouldn't rate it in pvp tho. Unless you've got a really nasty mind fire lance .

Never tried master brawler.

I'm trying master pikeman/masterbrawler (big maybe)/ fencer(grips only) / tka 0-3-1-0/ and something in swordsman. just looking for as much melee and ranged defense or kd defense whatever I can get out of it.

Just to say. I am a Master pike/doctor and I rock in pve and pvp. given I do have a mind fire lance that rocks.

But if your gonna stack. Master Pikeman, Brawler, and Tka 4-0-0-4 and whatever you can get is fencer would be my way to go.

I dunno... goes both ways. As a doc, you can heal your wounds. But you can't heal your mind pool, which you'll be draining as you heal yourself... doesn't help when they hit your mind, either.

Other hand, stacking defense makes you harder to hit, thus leaving less to heal. Getting yourself medic with the first two first aid boxes will do a good enough job healing you, and you won't have to worry about your mind -quite- so much, because, well... you won't get hit as much.

At least, that's the idea.

Master Doctor sure is a lot of points. I have often wondered why it is such a common complement to melee templates. Is it so tha tyou can always buff yourself without having to rely on anyone else? Or is it so you can cure your own state effects? In terms of pure healing, it seems like Master Medic should be sufficient. When I was a Master Medic/ Master Fencer I could heal myself for well over 2K easy with decent Stim Ds. Could someone enlighten me? With Master Medic instead of Doctor you have a lot more points free for defenses and things like exploration. Or am I missing the reason why so many people stick to Master Elite Brawler Class/Master Doctor? I have a Master Musician/Doctor on a 2nd account so I personally don't worry about the availablity of buffs.

buffing yourself is a godsend. but seriously, 0/4/4/0 in doc or even 0/3/4/0 is good enough for buffs. on Ice-nine i buff for 2400 w/ 0/4/4/0

Master Doc lets you cure Poison, Disease, and Fire. You can remove all state effects.

The crafting side gives you a nice break from fighting, andit works out a lot cheaper to make your own buff packs.

My thoughts behind each, as mentioned, were to get hit less and knocked down/dizzied lessas a defense stacker or to cure poison or diseases that the nice combat medics love to throw (self-buffing and rez are added benefits).

The other reasons would be defense stack to go find some nice NS pikes and tapes/armor attachments or go doctor to be able to buy the equipment.

Thanks for the input all.

I'm also having a lot of fun with lunge 2 and intimidate 2 as I grind up pikeman. Can someone tell me what the range is on Area Sweep? Is it a good substitute for lunge2, which can reach out 20 meters (further than any of my old commando specials :smileysad?

Thats what you meant right? And do you mean the area sweep you get in defenses 3? If you do, its range is the range of your weapon.

Doh! I need remedial smiley face classes.

It is a shame that you have to be a master brawler to get Lunge 2. That is a lot of skill points for one attack (even if it is 20meters) and a bit of speed and accuracy.

I originally migrated to master pike/master doc out of necessity. No amount of defense stacking could make up for not having armor.

But having done some defense stacking on a swordsman alt, I find myself wishing I had doc fairly often. Not for the ability to buff myself, but for the ability to heal myself of anything they can throw at me while in battle.

Got my swordsman killed in a starport yesterday by a mind-poison throwing ion rifle headshotting kiter cm/rifleman. All he had to do was keep running enough that I couldn't kill him before my mind (which was around 3k at the time) went out from the poison. On the other hand, with the pike/doc I could have just healed the poison and attacked his mind with my own poison and fire lances. Who knows if I would have won, but I'd have at least had a chance.

It's really a trade off between avoiding getting hit in the first place and dealing with the damage effectively after you do get hit. I find healing the damage more effective, since I'm going to get hit no matter what.
