I'm a fairly new player and my professions are going to be Master Ranger and CH. I've also picked up Novice Medic, and for my fighting skills (which will be limited) are going to be polearm 4.

I made polearm 3 last night and bought an LVA. Although it has great damage, the range modifiers are terrible (-54). I noticed that it does excellent damage...when it hits.

My question(s) is:

1. Since I'm only going to polearm 4, should I stick with the LVA? Is there something I can do to improve the range modifiers? I'm not too familiar with weapon powerups, but is there something that can help?

2. If there is no way to improve the LVA, should I stick with the wood or metal staff?

Staff is alright - but the basic lance is truly your friend :-)

if you feel the need to continue using the LVA at such an early level....just use auto attack....when you miss so much it is a waste of time and HAM, but you will do more damage on an auto attack with the LVA than a special with a lance, in my experience

Do not use the LVA if you're going to only get the 4th-tier brawler level. Weaponsmiths can lower the dmg and speed some to improve the accuracy to -40 or so, but that is still too difficult for you to use at that level. Nothing else can be done. Stick with the basic lance, it's much much better for that level.

If you're only going up to a 4th tier brawler skill, I'd have to say polearm might not be the best choice, sorry to say. I think the best 4th-tier brawler skill is 1-handed swordsman with a curved sword.

At the very least, only use a basic lance at your level.
