So while I was on vacation being bored like crazy with no computer
I was thinking of ways to make each profession truly unique in use, not just defense and specials. What I came up with for Pikeman is an assisted damage block.
It would work something like this..... since we have a fairly hard time keeping aggro in a group, lets not worry about keeping it. Rather than trying to keep the enemy attacking us, give some better defense to someone else.
The idea is that, if you are within 5m of the person who does have the aggro and holding a pike, they are given additional defense mods equal to what the Pikeman profession has, and only the Pikeman profession (to prevent someone who has say TKA and Pike from granting uber defense). In addition to the higher defense, therewould also be a 15% chance of making an "enhanced block", blocking all damage done to the person who has aggro and having it inflicted on the Pikeman instead. If the Pikeman was using Center of Being, there would be a 30% chance of an "enhanced block". Also, the assisted block would apply only if the Pikeman is attacking the same enemy as the aggro'd, to prevent multiple people from getting the modifier and just to make more logical sense.
As far as being realistic goes, this makes perfect sense (to me anyway). Having a long weapon would allow a Pikeman to fairly easily defend another character, and sometimes even completely block a blow against another person.
Comments? Flames? Death threats?

This is a cracking idea, but I don't think it would be feasible as an automatic thing... maybe if you targeted the person and used a special on them to activate it, and the protection lasted 20 seconds until you had to reapply it. Otherwise, it would probably be a bit overpowered.

Excellent idea... that has been proposed a long time before. It is a shame that pikemen do not get realistic advantages that would only bring new life into this game, and set it apart from all the others once again. If pikemen was possibly based more on the historical weapon and all its strengths, something like this would be very feasible and very entertaining to use in combat. Making mounts a factor in combat also, and then giving pikemen strong defences against charging mount attacks would be a joy to behold. You have my full support, using our range to protect others makes much too much sense. Speaking of which, why are we so lacking in the range of our weapon...?

Yah, it could possibly work as a useable skill if it was in the system as it is now, but I was thinking more along the lines of having each weapon specific profession having a special "innate ability" that would work only when you are holding the weapon associated with that profession. Make weapon type choice more important than just picking whichever does more damage.

It would seem that they've already implimented something like this, for creature pets. This was taken from the guide being put together on the newpetabilities that will be going live with the next publish, for Creature Handlers
