The benefits are never being caught in a situation where you can't do anything due to range (aside from fighting rifleman).
That's one of my biggest problems with the CU so far.
To be effective as either a rifleman or a pikeman I'm going to have to drop the other profession for another melee or ranged profession. Ignore that in live I'm effective with pikes because I spent time and money to get good weapons, speed tapes and FS melee speed skills, in the CU I'll need all of those things and probably swordsman too.
I'm left with two options that I don't really like: drop pikeman - which I love - for pistoleer or drop rifleman - which I love - for swordsman.
Neither are acceptable options.

I was going to go for a melee/ranged template to adapt in pvp but recently, I've found out that is not the case anymore. The most effective pvpers have been using very nice squad based tactics (melee/tankers in front, healers/CM in the middle/ranged at the rear), pure melee and pure ranged templates will be the order of the day for effective pvp runs (not to mention pve). If you plan to solo pvp in the new system, put it out of your head, it seems it will be a lot less common.
And thanks to a great Corr. for the response.![]()

I've been led to believe the pikeman is now a crowd control/disabling specialist, as is carbineer. I would think pikeman/carbs would be an effective crowd control specialist with the ability to switch between ranged and melee depending in the situation.
What are your opinions?

Having a ranged/melee template diversifies your skills and allows you to compete in different situations.
However, you lose out on +melee speed/accuracy bonuses as well as higher melee defense when taking a mixed template. You also don't have the ability to intermix specials because you have a ranged/melee template (as opposed to a swords/pike template where specials are interchangable). Pike/carb is most likely a fun template, and you should take it if that's the playstyle you like. In pvp though, I think you'll be at a disadvantage to a focused ranged/ranged or melee/melee template (at least, that's with the current cu build, which is subject to change before it hits live)

It's not bad with the correct supporting abilites. Problem is that switching weapons was somewhat hit or miss when I tested the template out, alot of 'slot occupied' or simply no switch at all. Last thing you want is a swordsman beating your head in while you fumble to switch your weapons up. As a pure supporting role I think it would work out fine, although taunting seems to be an issue in PvE (well, personally I think PvE is just a ISSUE).
If I was limited to just one toon I would definately be attempting to make the combo work, I don't think it is gimp if played right. However I have 2 combat toons to play with so I'm sticking with one full ranged, and one full melee.

I've done pikeman/carbineer, got so sick of carbs being so much worse than pikes i went pure melee in the end, things might be different after the CU though

I would think that Pikeman/Carbineer would actually be kinda weak, since both professions have very similar abilities. It might be better to take Pikeman + a hard-hitting offensive profession like Commando or Rifleman instead, that way you dont have two professions that do basically the same things.

First time I had pikeman, I ended up dropping it to pick up Carbineer, thinking I was basically just getting a ranged version of Pikeman.. ><
