Thread: Pikeman concerns as a tank

My goal post-CU was to become the best tank I could be; given that pikeman is supposed to be the 'crowd control' of the melee professions and second to TKM for tanking, I opted to become TKM/MPIKE, but I have some concerns that may or may not have resolution.

Some of them are

1. As a M.Swordsman instead of M.Pike, I have an area taunt (which seems like it should be a crowd control skill)

2. As a M.Swordsman I also have the sword flurry (which gives over 150 extra defense for a short time)

3. As a M.Swordsman I have the same melee defense and general melee speed, but MORE ranged defense and general melee accuracy than M.Pikeman

4. The killer of all, I can STILL USE a Vibrolance or any other Pikeman weapon I choose even as M.Swordsman

All of that said, with a couple skill boxes into pike I can also still have a good area knockdown and area attack, that does more damage with M.Swordsman than it does with M.Pike

Besides the fact that I love being M.Pikeman and having Intimidate as well, why would I choose this over M.Swords?

Does anyone know if there are plans to make the VLance M.Pike only?

Are their any plans to increase the 'crowd control' ability of M.Pike? Maybe by providing an area taunt or increased defensive abilities?

I'm really torn, because I want to be M.Pike but cannot justify it over choosing M.Swords given the above reasons and the fact that I can do much more damage with the high-level skills in M.Swords, all whilst wielding the same Pikeman weapons, or a Scythe or Powerhammer if I choose.

Help!

Yeah, I don't understand why it feel like when I use Improved Impale I do more damage than Sword Flurry from swords. And that sword flurry gives a defensive bonus to a damage dealer? I'm almost contemplating asking for these two specials to be switched. What does everyone think?

The devs explained to us why they gave taunt to swords but the exact wording escapes my memory (was almost a year ago lol). It made perfect sense at the time though.

My opinion on the issues you brought up, sure it would make more sense that Impale should go to Swords and Flurry should go to Pike. I believe its to balance it, Pike is more defensive, but Swords needs some defense, and likewise Pike needs some Offense. It would leave Pikes more gimped as the next highest damage specialis Leg Hit

But then again I am a Master Swords / Master Pike so it wouldn't actually bother me.

Please do not switch the two...It is a terrible idea.... We will have no good dmg attack. (Many of us are TK/MPike and need Impale)... Sword Flurry is not that great, and has high action cost... We would be gimping ourselves in a bad way.

Yeah Improved Impale even does more damage than any of the Fencer specials and is only rivaled by a +critical+ critical hit or a power attack (which even doesn't have a significant advantage). It is nice to have for a TKM/MPike though because it becomes a primary damage dealing skill if you don't want to dabble into swordsman.

I suppose I wouldrather like to see more area effecting abilities like area-intimidate, area-warcry, area-stun attack or a weaker area attack that also has a 'taunt' effect, or maybe just turn warcry into an area-taunt with some small added effect (to make it more desirable than the swordsman area-taunt). Mostly more options to 'control' the enemies surrounding us.

On my wish list I would havean attack similar to sword flurry, but that gives us a defensive bonus improvement for each enemy surrounding us, which would further contribute to our crowd control ability dependant on how much of a crowd was around us, or maybe even have the skill increase our skill recharge (speed) dependant on how many enemies are around us, like we're gaining adreneline as we take on a larger and larger crowd, which in turn would give us a better chance to avoid letting the crowd itself take over control.Afterall, for being 'crowd control' we sure are slow weilding that pike compared to other classes.

Impale does more damage the Sword Flurry because its a damage inducing attack, nothing else, while Sword Flurry is for defense. It makes sense. The Swordsman Head Hit and Power Attack both do more damage than Impale, its fine as is I think.

As for trading the two.... I don't think the Swordsman need another damage attack, already got Power Hit, Head Hit, and Critical Hit. Being that they have no stat attacks, Sword Flurry is a nice little defensive buffer for a short time.

I think another defensive skill for Pikeman somewhat like a stance, as Bounty Hunters get, would be a better idea for improving defense of pikes.
