I have two characters... one is a CH and near master carbineer, so I am experienced with combat.

my other character -- is my original charcter, the masterweaponsmith, that I am finally making into a pikeman like I planned to do when the game came out.

I have the luxury of having total freedom with weapons because I can craft them. I crafted up a run of top notch long vibro axes and ran them through a slicer until I got a 32% damage slice. then I manufactured a few hundred melee powerups. I noticed the accuracy mods on the LVA are bad so I went for the accuracy and speed mods for the powerups.

I am almost to novice pikeman now but despite the top notch weaponry I am still finding myself having difficulty gaining exp anywhere near as fast as I can with ranged weapons. I am using not just top notch weaponry, but top notch composite armor, and constantly under the effects of food/drinks (and sometimes drugs) to cancel out the ham cost issues. even after all of these advantages, it's still difficult to get exp. my heart truly goes out to anyone who doesnt have the best equipment and unlimited food/drinks/powerups/drugs. I have no idea how you guys do it.

anyway I looked at the pikeman tree and saw there's a knockdown move early on. awesome, this may be just what is needed to level decently.

but they're nerfing knockdown so you can only do it once per 30 seconds.

now I'm really left wondering... without knockdown, how the heck is anyone supposed to level up pikeman at a reasonable pace?

with my carbineer I can blast people away and get hundreds of thousands of exp very quickly. I dont see how a pikeman can advance anywhere even remotely close to as fast as this because you're constantly being attacked and the defensive bonuses aren't enough to compensite for the inability to kite and get in several hits before the enemy closes range.

I didn't wear armor when i was lvling Polearm, and I only put my composite on when i would pull range attacking mobs. (those days are over now that KD is nerfed to nearly useless)....

BUT, in order to get experiance for polearm, i would recommend removeing the armor. It makes your specials cost way to much. I would make myself some noodles, rations, and starshine for myself when i was solo'ing to help with downtime.

BTW, now that moving, and fireing is suppose to seriously hender your fireing skills, you will find that 'kiteing' is going to be alot less effective now.

it seems to me that SOE is trying to slow down advancement. I imagine it has something to do with lack of content, and people bored after they use all there skill points, as i am finding quickly.

BTW, i am a Master Weaponsmith, Master Artisan, expert pistol user (apprentice pistolleer HEHE) and 2/0/4/2 Pikeman, so i understand what you are talking about.
