On the Scylla server right now my Master Pikewoman is involved in a major Guild War.
The past few days have seen many battles and large group assaults.
On both sides Jedi outnumbered all other game classes (thats because this is KOTOR online now and not Star Wars RPG).
Fighting was heavy and furious. But I feel in large scale warfare, melee no longer has main place. We have been reduced to support victims.
With bases using turrets, NPC's firing guns, and ranged professions popping everything from a distance, melee is losing its own battle. Jedi can sabrethrow while we wait for that lucky 5 meter zone, 60 meters if your cheating with an un-nerfed pike which is rare.
Without having some form of ROOT defence, melee is losing ground in the GCW. I must of been ROOTED/SNARED and knockdown from over 30 meters away at lease 20+ times last night.
Standing and waiting for a stray fool to run a suicide mission on us or waiting for a gang rush can be long and boring when 90% of the action is ranged.
Granted during the mass confusion and god aweful lag of major war, when a foolish group does come in close for melee range, area sweep does work well but not always. And unless you watch your support of the group, once your ROOTED, 6 lightsabres turn you into swiss cheese.
Our attacks to a point may work well for PvE and 1 on 1 encounters, but for tanking-group support and crowd control, we fail. If all I am in the GCW is a area sweep meat bag waiting to be ROOTED and killed, melee is doomed.
In a world of glow sticks and 30+ meter ROOT shots, melee loses its appeal.
What am I tanking in the GCW when I am ROOTED and the enemy is 10 meters from me?
WE NEED BETTER AREA/GROUP/CROWD CONTROL abilities if we are mainly support.
Seems SOE just wants Jedi and ranged professions in this game. The battle I was in last night was at lease 30+ people. We know our enemy and our own players very well. No one was a Squad Leader, No one was a CH, and only 4 of use where melee.
I miss the old days...

well melee defnitly has it own spot in the battle
1st we an draw fire from turrets, another we can neak round back and get off our busses extreamly fast and brek their lines, its quite a amazing sight to see 20 pikemen inside the enemy lines, then the ranged can get little closer and beat the crap out the turerets
well i hoep this wil lhelp you in further tactics, but thsi tactic only works if oyu all get ina bus(2 of 3 busses fully loaded) that way they dont ca haze of purple dots fomr the back lines.

i know plenty of melee folks that do fine in pvp battles, you just have to know your role and the people in their group have to know theirs. even if you know what your doing, it isn't enough. you have to have a group that knows how to use tactics, not just 1-2-3 charge.

While this may be true in theory, I've never seen it actually happen in practice. When the jedi on our team aren't dueling because they're bored ADD-afflicted 12-year olds, they're concentrating all their force-heavy attackson enemy jedi, who areusually using avoid incapacitation. Of course this iswhile the enemy ranged line pounds the crap out of us and their healers go totally unhindered. She's right.. I hate to say it but non-jedi melee in the Combat Upgrade was NOT designed with large-scale pvp in mind.
