With the longer range and lances, I would expect Pikeman to attack the Mind Pool. (much like rifles)
With medium range and slashing, I would expect Swordsman to attack the Action Pool. (much like carbines)
Lances were used a long time agoto attack the mind, why weren't they a long, long time ago?

Because the DEVs aren't are smart as you
Actually..........you have a point..... but I think in the end Fencer and Swordsmen should be one combined profession *shrug*

but should you be sweepers? isn't the idea of lances to "poke" your enemies to death?

You can attack the mind pool with Nightsister lances. When I was a master of pikes I loved using spin attack 2 and then lunge 2 to poison, disease, dizzy, and knockdown my opponents at the same time. Swordsman was meant to be the most damaging meleeclass and so it was the mind attack class. Pikeman was meant to be the "crowd control" melee class. Pikeman needs a move like a pre-nerf charge shot that can knock an opponent down over and over again.

Lances drive, but staffs and polearms in general are used to sweep. The motion of a staff/polearm (every one but a lance)is too difficult to use in such a way as to strike vertically. Try swinging a stick vertically repeatedly versus sweeping, horizontal motion. The horizontal motion is much easier, more fluid and repeatable. I think the devs got this distinction right. Snipers aim for the head, pikes/polearms (except lances, arguably) sweep and the legs are the best target for that.

Pikeman should be best at defense, as an offensive pikweilder leaves himself open, but I digress.
Yes,polearms in generalare used most often as sweeps. Lances, on the other hand, really don't get used in this game. Lances are really only used in two areas: in a phalanx and on horseback. Otherwise, it gets back to leaving yourself open to counterattack.

Arg, you said horseback.. now the "mounted issue" will rise again hehe.
I would expect lances to be driven into a chest rather then a head actually,
so I don't mind the lack of mind pool specific damage.

well, i get the idea now. i personally would have rather seen it the other way, using spears and halberds to joust at your enemy's head, but i suppose it works just as well, as is...
