Thread: The Last Samurai (pikeman)

I just wanted to share an observation.

I just saw the Last Samurai, and saw some things that bear on pikemen.

In a scene where the Japanese 'army' has first encountered the Samurai, Tom Cruise finds himself alone, surrounded by 5 or 6 warriors. His gun, empty. His sword, disarmed. His kung fu, bad. Wounded and desparate, he picks up a pike (spear). Now, isn't wounded and desparate a fairly accurate description of pikemen in general? Anyway, he procedes to hold at bay all of these trained warriors, on his knees, with just a pike. Granted his HAM costs were too high, and he quickly fatigued.

I thought this a beautiful representation of the class we are supposed to be. Although I would prefer not to be wounded, fatigued, and on my knees.

On a humourous note, during the final battle scene when the samurai were running down the riflemen (sound familiar), they were getting decimated. When they finally reached them, my friend (galaxie rifleman) leaned over and said, "once themelee reach the rilfes, its all over for the riflemen." I nearly choked on my winegum.

Don't be so proud of this technological terror you've created. The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

Nice. That's why I'm thinking we could really do well with a move that keeps targets or multiple targets (!) at a certain range, it makes sense with the profession and there are some really cool examples in nearly every movie that has a fight scene with a polearm of some kind, i.e. Matrix, Last Top Gun (I mean Samuri), etc...

Wouldn't that be a great move? It could buy us time if we were solo, and it would makes us a great addition to groups, which will seemingly become more necessary after they raise the difficulty of creatures/NPCs in coming patches and publishes.

absolutely!

I also just saw a show on Discovery, called Extreme Martial Arts (?). In which various weapons etc were shown. The one that caught my attention was the lady with the staff. They called it a "Nine foot circle of death".

Circle of Death - Pikeman can spin the polearm about him, creating a circle of death. Damage can be minimal, but anyone approaching this circle is rebuffed. Players can stand within this circle and remain safe for a period of time. Knockdown may occur, dizzy may occcur, stun may occur. Bleed could also occur, if pikeman is equiped with a bladed weapon. Ham cost, signifigant, but what move isn't.

Or how about a leaping downward slam of a staff? It would have upwards of 10 meters range and your character would jump up and slam his staff into the opponents head, or a body shot if they are kneeling/kd'd.

That sounds like a great idea, and seems to be more along the lines of true staff users out there, but i think it would require high ham costs...which we already have, but at some point the devs are going to change that (hopefully) and i think we may get new moves after that, and i would be willing to have higher ham costs for a move like that.

Anatres,

I think Tom Cruise did a good job in the movie...have you seen it yet? if so, i would like to hear your thoughts on why you think its the "last top gun"...heh, its a funny title though, lol

haha, mind bleed...that would rule. It would also make us a little more viable in PvP.
