Thread: How to make block more effective...

Hey All,

Pardon me if there's a discussion on this somewhere, but I didn't see one. Anyway, we all know, and I've seen several posts on it, that block is just not on the same level as Dodge or Counterattack.


Let's review the current effects:

Dodge - avoids 100% of the damage, seems to work as intended a person dodges a fair amount of attacks at the cap limit of 125.


Counterattack - (this is the one I am least familiar with, but these results are taken from what I've seen people post about it). Avoids 100% of the damage and supposedly grants an auto-attack counter. Feel free to correct me on that one. Also seems to work fairly well at the cap of +125.


Block - Avoids 50% of the damage. Doesn't seem to work all that well unless you are using COB.


So I think it's pretty obvious who has the short end of the stick here, and I don't want to turn this into a whine type of post. Gunman has already pointed out that the Devs are looking into ways of bringing Block up to par with the other secondary defenses. The point of my post is to try to help the Devs come up with some solutions that would make Block better.


1) If a shot is "Blocked", then have it so we kind of deflect the damage back onto the attacker. So that we would take 50% of the attack but also deflect 50% of that attack back onto the attacker. Or if this would be too powerful, perhaps something like 25% of the damage. This could kind of make sense against another meleer I'd think, not sure about against a ranged weapon though.


2) Since it was stated that block will not be changed to not take the 50% damage, then in the least I think an attack should be blocked much more often than a dodge or counterattack. Perhaps make it so block would also block the state effects, whereas dodge and counterattack do not.


I'll try to think of more ideas I can, but if anyone else has any good ideas please chime in.

lol, ya, the pikeman forum is slow moving indeed


think your on the right track... having the damage reflect on the target doesnt make sence... personaly i think counter attack would block 50% and deal damage back to the attacker, while block would.. well... stop the damage, maby slow your next turn down a bit due to the fact that your deflecting there blow.


as for a simple fix, increase the frequency of blocking attacks, and make sure that the damage is cut in half by the block, then goes to your armor before you take the damage. it seems that the frequency of successfull blocks is our bigest issue (other than the 50% thing)

So farI haven't really gotten any ideas from people, so I suppose people would just want it to occur more often, fix the actual visual todisplay the +block+and combat spam. But to be honest, I'm not sure if this is enough to balance it with dodge,counterattack, unless of course it occurs like 2 x as frequently as the others.


I think it should make sense that since we are the only one taking damage from this defense that it should be allowed to deflect some damage to the attacker as well.


Perhaps the real reason the Devs don't look at this is that Block is also the Rifleman defense (although as a master rifleman for a long time I have never seen myself block until I picked up the pike), so they don't want to fix or make block better because it would make riflemen even more powerful.

To make Block desirable as Counterattack is (Also Master Carbineer), we need a lot more toughness so that the damage we DO take after the block (and subsiquent Armor absorption of the 50% damage) is lessened. I also like the idea of block blocking the status effects. That would make the entire block worthwhile, since counter and dodge still let the status through.
