Thread: Need help, pikes vs. swords
Message Edited by Kalidon_Sunchaser on 08-30-2005 08:30 PM
Let me ask you a question.. I'm currently Mpikes/Mswords/4000 doc. I'm thinking of switching swords with TK. Do you think it's worth it?
kite the mobs for abot 5 seconds. you have them in a cone behind you, /warcry while running and get the whole group. just got to move 10 meters every 20 seconds to keep an entire group warcry'd forever![]()
btw both have their strengths, pikes is better at surviving, but with swords you will take out single mobs faster.
I am also MTK/MPikes/Doc 2002, and I wouldnt trade it for anything. Since I took on this template, Ive been haveing a great time.
I appreciate the enthusiasm everyone, but I know you all like pikes. That's why I posted here, I figured you would all be the best to ask for a good reason to stay with pikes. But posts like "I like pikes, pikes are great, pikes are fun, etc..." aren't helpful. Reasons. I need reasons why I would be better off with pikes then with swords. I understand that you like the profession. Now tell me why.

I like pikes because of the wide variety of different specials and the ways to cripple an opponent. Intimidate -> -20% damage, Warcry -> -40 attack speed, Stun -> -10% damage, Sweep Attack -> Area Knockdown, Impale -> high damage. You get a bit of everything meaning you can adapt to almost any situation and turn it to your advantage.
Compare this to Swordsman and you'll get: Armor Break -> increase your damage, Critical Strike -> high damage, Power Attack -> high damage, Head Hit -> high damage. Which to me screams boring.

Well since you said you like PvE its your thing stay with pikes no matter what... actually if you wanted to go master pikes master swords doc 4000 or doc 2002 your choice it owns in PvE im it but im changing again after 5 weeks with this temp only because im PvP only but otherwise pike can be used with any melee temp as a PvP temp or PvE temp its just how you use it!
BTW your not so good in PvE with your master tka master pike 2002 doc because tkm is more of a PvP kinda profession thast why its so oftenyl used by most melee players!
Also while im at it like i stated before try master pike master swords 2002 im that but 4000 doc and it owns PvE even without decent armor and is decent towards all you PvP lovers ftw!
actually tka is much more geared towards pve over pvp. 99% of the mobs in this game dont armorbreak, so you dont need to worry about not having ab sliced armor as a tkm, and you still get 6k resists to everything, for free. this is optimal for dungeon crawls and grinding since your armor never looses condition, and you can tank awesomely with improved cob (also awesome for pvp).
for pvp if you get armorbreaked by good jedi or good melee your in for a tough fight (when i didnt have ab sliced armor i still won 90% of my fights vs jedi and melee with ab), and tka doesnt offer any good dmging abilities really. unarmed combo really isnt that great. the only worthwhile ability for pvp you get from tka is improved cob.

or instead of choosing you can master one and dabble in the the other, i would recomeend master pike though as improved intimidate is more of required ability theyn improved sword furry or imp berserk, and go with x434 or 444 swords to pick up Adv. Armor break , Imp Critical strike and Imp Heead Strike as ways to augment you damaging abiltites with a pike
about the onyl reason i owuld master swords over pike is that polearm defense tapes dont drop, but with CoB its really splitting hairs defence wise, so i guess its not a big reason to master swords, you get slightly better speed and accuracy with swords, but if you get any of the doc buffs and use the right foods along with Adv. armor break pike is equal to if not better then swords

I haven't read all the other posts because i'm lazy, but let me give you this perspective.
My good RL buddy whom I play with all the time is M.Swords/TKM, and i'm M.Pikes/TKM. The rest of our template is very similar, he has 0040 pikes for the warcry/intimidate and I have 0040 Swords for the Armor Break; we both have 0040 Medic for the heals.
Now when we duel each other, I generally use the Katarn Knucklers and he always uses a power hammer; although I often switch to the Kaminoan Great Staff or my 1000dmg VL both with SAC PuP's while fighting. He uses a SAC PuP as well.
I've never lost a duel to him. He doesn't suck, he can be most any non-Jedi in PvP, and I can beat most any non-Jedi in PvP as well... but I also can beat many Jedi and he has trouble doing so..
The real advantage in M.Swords is the Armor Break. The power attack is not worth the time wasted and SAC Cost; the Critical is nice IF it hits for +Critical+ but otherwise it's comparable to the Pikeman Impale attack.
Utilizing Warcry, Initimidate, Stun, and Area Knockdown's, you can tank a rediculous number of Mobs, and you are at no disadvantage to a M.Swords/TKM as long as you have the Armor Break skill. You will have better defense, worthy offense, and the irreplacable warcry/intimidate states along withImpale which is a great finishing move, yeilding more damage than any other non-Jedi melee attack next to M.Swords powerattack and a +Critical+ that actually hits.
A final comment on tanking mobs; my M.Swords/TKM buddy though comparable in Pvp to my M.Pike/TKM template is NO MATCH in PvE when it comes to tanking. He can take a few CL80's at a time, and probably take them out a little faster than I can, but lets face it chances are if you're taking on 3+ mobs at a time, you're doing this to grind lairs for XP; why would you want to limit yourself to 3-4 mobs at a time when you can be group tank taking on 7-8 or 10+ mobs at a time?
You're looking at me like i'm crazy..
I've succesfully tanked around 10 CL80's at a time doing spin-attacks on their lair, whilst initimidating them, warcrying, keeping CoB running, popping a Bacta shot here and there with the occasional Stim for backup, and doing an Area-Knockdown whenever I get the chance (which will give you a few seconds to heal up without getting touched by the enemies).
So...
