Thread: Why do ranged always kick my butt in PvP
you will always have to run down a ranged prof. good news is, you have a few things to help give you the edge:
1: burst run food
2: youre a master doc, dont heal til youre down to 25% health in order to conserve mind
3: improved intimidate immediately
4: armor break all the time
5: dont use warcry until they are low on action or mind or both. why slow their attacks down when youre trying to get them to burn up as much action/mind as you can?
6: parry ripotse stance is only good when youre in a bad pinch (when you are stunned, dizzied, and you are up for another knockdown)
7: switch your heals with your stims so you dont use as much mind, pop a ruby if you really need to
8: buy a crate of synth steak and loop a macro for it. activate the macro when all else fails and you are low on health and mind. that last 700 health will last a long time.
9: use corners/objects. make them come to you as often as you can. hide around a corner for a bit or behind an obstacle.especially when your mind is getting low, they will think that youre trying to rest and recharge and will come right up to you point blank 9 out of 10 times.
10: dont buy into the weapon theory that better damage=winning. Speed and sac are your most important factors to lasting in pvp. get your lance speed sliced and use sac powerups.
11. finally, have patience. you are a tank that can heal, if you just stood there and didnt even attack, you could stay alive for 15 minutes easily.
hope that helps
In addition to keeping Armor Break on them try to keep them on the ground as much as possible. Right after they drop hit them with Impale and/or a Leg Hit (in case they have the nerve to get back up), you can keep up the impale but I like to just use Melle Hit/Strike to save on pools.
Before they get up hit them with a Stun or Dizzy attack. I have rarely been able to put both Stun and Dizzy on anything at the same time so it's a matter of time and place which one to use but use one.
With that said I have a few other thoughts...
I highly recommend that ALL melee classes get TKM. There really just isn't any other way. I don't PvP much at the moment, I just hit master Pike recently, but TKM has been the foundation of my abilities.
In PvP with Pike and TKM you get CoB; to add to your defense, Meditate/Power Boost; to add to your health and what is possibly the single most usefull ability in Melee, Inate Armor. It's free, doesn't degrade and is weightless so there are no penalties.
At TKM I beleive the Inate Armor is akin to 6k defense across the board. That's a really good set of armor that you never have to worry about.
Most, if not all, ranged attackers will be wearing the biggest and best armor that they can and will have penalties attached to them that you will not. As a Pikeman wearing a suit of RIS will look really *hawt* but being the badd ass in the duster with the Pike will look cool.
Another cool thing with TKM is self healing. Meditate is a great skill, it will heal your wounds, stop your bleeding and pretty much otherwise make you feel good.
So auto-follow those ranged SOB's and drop 'em to the ground where they belong. When you're done listening to their plee's for mercy drive your Pike through their Armor Plated Heads.
I would always keep Warcry on them. Yes, if you save it, they'll waste a lot of action, but in all honesty if they're a good ranged player, and have good equipment, they won't be running low on action very often at all if they're kiting. I speak from experience, I used to beat melee people all the time with my BH/Rifles because they would chase me constantly, and with all the action foods and a good rifle, I could spam specials almost constantly. Don't bank on them losing action, take charge and cripple their attack power with Warcry and Intimidate.
Parwan Nutricake is the burstrun food, and probably you're best friend in the fight next to Warcry/Intimidate. Keep a stack handy all the time, and use it when it's needed, not just whenever it runs out. As a doc, you'll want plenty of mind foods, as well (I personally use Mandalorian Wine, Won Won, and Spiced Tea). A good hint with foods, as well, is to keep Blob Candy, Bofa Treats, and Spiced Tea eaten at all times. They last for 40 minutes, and they hardly use up filling anyways, so there's not much reason not to.
Wait to go for the knockout punch. Don't spam specials on them constantly unless your action affords you that ability. Just keep the generic melee hit on auto attack (or the next step up, if you don't mind the increased action drain), and keep state affects on them. Wait for them to get halfway down on health (most people won't heal until they go less than half health), then KD them and try for the knockout. At the very least, you'll force them to concentrate more on healing with that than on attacking.
Overall, keep your wits about you. Don't panic if they root you, or if they KD you, or if you start to get low on health. If you keep Warcry/Intimidate on them, you should be fine in those regards. Heal at around half health (in case those sneaky bastiges follow my advice, too
