Soviet, Master Pikeman-WanderHome-

Pikeman : The only class that couldn't hit the ground if they droped their weapon.
Pikeman : Doing massive damage; to the air surrounding our target.
Pikeman : You're dead meat, unless you happen to be standing in front of us.
Pikeman : Because the devs were one profession short.
DEVs : Pikeman? Thats a class?

Well sir, I've been playing since release and have finally made my way to master pike so I feel I'm educated enough to offer advice.

First, I'm truly sorry you have found the holocron that you did because this profession has to be the hardest to master of all (no offence to chefs, ids, smiths, and entertainers etc. your grinding isn't hard just tedious and time consuming).

Here's my list of tips on how to gain xp quickly.

1. Get medic skills asap. And I mean now.

Unless you have a personal doctor who is going to bp you throughout your pikeman journey you will need medic skills. As well as being master pikeman I'm also a 4-4-3-1 doctor and believe you me this has helped an enormous amount in my ascent to master pikeman. If you do happen to have a doctor friend willing to follow you around and heal you constantly then disregard this tip, if you don't though you will definatly need it.

2. Find a fellow melee combatant to group with.

Unless you have a pet willing to take the abuse from mobs (which I personally detest as they take your xp away), you will be the target of all mobs before any of your ranged friends. Mobs attack the closest things to them and as we pikemen for some reason have to be within 6m of mobs that usually makes us it. If you have a fellow melee fighter at your side you can use /taunt to take the others burden of the tank. I myself travel with a TKA friend and the two of us complement each other wonderfully.

3. DON'T USE ARMOR.

People will swear up and down that armor is great and whatnot but I'll tell you that the HAM costs of our moves are so excessive that combined with armor mods youll kill yourself long before a mob kills you. Now mind you this is of course to be combined with tip 1 because you will take a beating and you will need healed. I went out and paid in the range of 180k for a full set of comp armor to see if I could withstand the beating and turned into a meaty can of spam for some mob to crack open and feast on the goodness inside. Don't be swayed leave the armor at home.

4. Buffs galore.

See tip 1. Get doc skills to buff yourself or pay for them you'll need them.

5. Migration of stats.

If you follow tip 1 and choose to learn medic skills and heal yourself in battle, you will find that your mind bar tends to disappear quicker then a fart in the wind. If you have good buffs and good stims you can dump a buttload of your health and action into your mind (not too much you still have to be able to take a few shots). As im sure all melee players will attest to a mind is a terrible thing to waste and tends to be the first thing to go, so migrate those stats.

6. Weapon choice.

Start with a real good basic lance until you get to novice, then go with the vibro lance (unless the mob has high electricity resist in which case go back to basic lance), and then when you get your next boost of accuracy switch to the long vibro axe. The method to this madness is that the long vibro axe is all but useless until your accuracy mods are high enough to outweigh the horrid -55 range mods that come along with it. So use the vl to start and then switch to lva later (of course accounting for resists, dont use lva for high kinetic resist and dont use vl for high electricity resist.

7. Grinding the Mobs.

Personal preference here. Myself I would say to head to Dantooine and wage an all out assault on piket longhorns. They are real good to beat on with your lva, they don't db and only the males assist. Great xp for these guys. Of course come armed with a inventory full of stims and having a few friends is required as well. If your not quite up to the challenge of the pikets stick with the rontos on Tatooine. Same as pikets only the bulls assist they dont db but the xp isnt quite as good (you dont really need a whole lot of help with these though.)

So in the end I'd say the best way of gaining xp quick is a combination of medic skills to heal yourself in combat, having a few good friends to help you grind it out and making sure you have to right tools for the job. Most of these things I didn't learn until late in the game. With my stats migrated and my doctor skills, I can pretty much solo the world now (I'm not talking about dark jedi and such like that of course but most high-end mobs within reason).

Hope this helps and remember when you grind your way to master and are ready to move on to the next holo-profession.... when you speak of pikemen speak kindly as you will understand our plight.

Forgot to tell you to pickup a few nice acks of stim-b's...to heal yourself if ever in a really big fight. Only needed them once though when i hit a huurton lair too much...caught a muon downer and had to make a camp....during that time I was resting approximately18-20 or so huurton howlers and regular huurtons popped up. I thought to myself..'hmmm, i wonder if...', So i popped another Muon, drank two tat sunburns...ran right into the middle of their pack and commenced area knockdowns..area hits...spin attacks..action bleeds..it was probably the most fun PvE I've ever had...and I won...huurton carcasses were everywhere.

Oh and one more thing.... I came across Pikeman via the holocron as well. I initially was saying to myself..'awe crap'....but actually it has become my favorite profession within the game. I love the moments of PvP when I get to run up behind an impy, and pretty much decimate him/her in a matter of one or two hits...beware that you may come to love this lesser known class, as I have. And who needs a tanking pet...you are the tank!!!
