Hiyas...

For about the 6th time now, I'm consideringrolling a Piker here, like I have several times before but then stopped for various reasons (never have made it to novice)...

I have come to realize I vastly prefer melee combat to the ranged combat... but I have a series of questions that are holding me in a type of limbo...

I had been starting a BH, because from what I see the BH can hold their own in PvP and PvE combat, plus it seems unique (despite the bugs) with going on hunting (investigation) missions, etc. However, each day I barely log in because I just don't find the gun fighting very inspiring (and also quite easy in most cases).

I love the romance/appearance of the melee fighters, and find myself vastly enjoying the combat when I feel like I'm "smacking something down"... However, each time I think "I'll just do it and go Pike", I freeze because of the following concerns...

I am a solo player. 100 percent solo. I understand there are bugs/balance issues- I do not care about those much, and I know Pike is hard to play due to some of them. However- there's a difference between "hard" and "impossible"... If I went Pike, down the road I wanted to take on say a Dark Jedi (or some other tougher creature)- is that a "not gonna happen" or is it possible to go solo in that situation (with the right setup/equipment)?

Also, though it isn't huge on my list, I would like to PvP at some point... is it -completely- pointless as a Piker? Seems like you can't sneak up on anyone since you show on radar, so it seems like any attempt to attack someone is just going to result in your being eyeshot / knockdown 40 feet short and deathblowed... Any PvP pike success ability?

The primary issue that freezes me is that especially with armour, the HAM stats are so very puny that it seems -mandatory- for all melee classes to be master doctor buffed. In fact, the TKA I was working on recently, I felt I -had- to work on master doc as well, or I'd not be able to go out and do my thing (often impossible to find docs buffing when you want, nor afford the costs every 2 hours)... So, as a Piker do you HAVE to have the buffs to succeed? Or are people able to have success with buffs/food and just decent armour?

Also- just to reconfirm, I've never seen the midlevel or advanced pike moves- are they "eye candy"? I like the moves to look cool, and have the understanding they do look good...

Thanks in advance, and again I understand there are balance/bugs to deal with but I am not horribly put off by balance issues unless as above they make things "impossible"...

Appreciate any feedback or thoughts on the above! Just looking for a spark to save me here- I'm getting lost in limbo, still have never mastered a single profession since day 1, and I'm losing interest quickly... Any Pikemen/women who can provide insight?

Er, sorry I exceeded the 3 word post limit but I'm sure at least a few of the Pikers have reading comprehension skills!! (I sure would hope...)

I'll give the "anti-reading" version here... I really need answers from Pikers on this...

Do Pikers have to have medic buffs to succeed?
If so doPikers have to have the doc skills themselves to be realistic or is it not so bad to find them and afford the buffs all the time?
Will I have a near impossible time fighting very difficult (i.e. Dark Jedi/even tougher) PvE creatures, as I solo 100 percent of the time?
Do Pikers have -any- chance in PvP?
Do Pikers look pretty (eye candy) doing their combat moves?

Those are the key questions I asked before without my reasonings... anyone without a tolerance for reading have feedback on this list? You might save a SWG player or even help add one more to your Pikemen ranks... Thanks!

Hehe....you have to remember, this board doesn't often go very fast.

Medic buffs help, but are not necessary, especially after we got Center of Being. 70% kinetic ubese armor helps *tremendously*.

Some medic skills are necessary, really. The HAM costs of specials are rediculous. Buffs and if buffs are not available, tatooine sunburns are required to use specials.

Without pets, I think everyone has a hard time solo'ing jedi/krayts/etc similar things. With pets you'll do fine. I solo all the time and there isn't anything I can take on, I believe.

PvP: given composite armor and a good weapon, we can do alright now that our range has been extended for specials and we can use them while moving. You can do alright.

Pikemen have the coolest animations hands-down.

Bless you... That's what I was looking for! Now I still have to decide on what other professions to take to create a fun character!

Thanks Antares, you do Pikemen/women proud!

Well, I don't know about that...You should also get others' opinions to have a better set of responses.

I am myself a master doctor and are currently 2-0-1-2 in pike. I can solo pretty much anything as long the mob is alone. Buffs are a must as the previous poster said because the specials are so high in ham suction

I find that when i buff up and use a moun gold i can even take on severel NS'er or severel other mobs for an example nitzhes with the help of my non ch pet.

But if you dont wanna go through the grind of master doc, food-drinks-spices are the way to go. On a sidenote thats a shame since it would be nice to fight something, even a lowlevel mob, without the need to use a stim because of, again, the high ham cost.

As far as the pvp goes, i really cant say. I focus on leveling at the moment so in fact i havent once fought a pvp battle. But a guess would be that you would loose. Was a master pistoleer before and then i would just stay out of range and i would win. Even if you burstrun i would just do the same. But thats old news. Ranged wins over melee 90 pro cent of the time. But: If you get in range, you would probebly be victorious.

So, I can only recomend pikeman. The other melee classes are by any means probebly stronger but overall pike IS the funniest class. But truth be told, i havent tried the other melee classes out

#1 If you plan to go the nonPet way, I suggest getting areal high defense in melee and ranged, as well as good extra mods like block, defense vs. posture, stun, etc... Iam myselfa non CH pikeman, and I have no problems with higher creatures like krayts, NS(except the Elders, me hates them...), Kimogilas etc.. Spices and Food'n Drinks are vital

#2 Gotta love the animations!
