Thread: Tanking 101

If you watch carefully, it's not just ab resist armor and 4000doc heals. It's the use of warcry and intimidate, the combinations of food, and the use of specials. When is the last time you have seen anyone stand toe to toe with 4 jedi and last 2min?
QFE amigo, let alone him being CL71, and the majority of those Jedi whacking on him are from a guild called FEDS on Lowca, they talk so damn highly of themselves and how uber they were pre CU (if you read the Jedi forum, you'll get so bored of seeing their hundreds of threads about it)- well Samraui proved that they aren't all that great without the FRS mods.

heh, yeah I guess I'm an old timer in this game now. Been a pikeman since before there were knockdown timers (for those of you who remember).
IMO the current pikeman prefession is the strongest it has ever been. Im happy to see so many people interested in the profession since we used to be the worst melee prof in the game.
I do have a concern though, and people's reaction to this video only validated it more.
Our forum is littered with pikeman template questions, and when a video comes out with someone doing well as a pikeman, everyone wants to know what his template was. It worries me that people think all they need to do is choose a certain template for the 'I win" button to appear. I was proud of the fact that old school pikeman made our profession good even when it was the laughing stock of the melee profs. But now that pikeman is a good prof without needing as much skill..... you see where this is going. Just miss the old forum days i guess. We talked about pvp strategy instead of fielding template questions all day.

When I get on a forum, I check all the melees for tips if I can find any, all I see is zomg rate my template el oh el! and other dumb stuff.
So while It was nice to see him tank jedi, I applaud the fact he is showing others how to do it. besides that it would be intereesting if we can get some good posts going regarding tactics and template debates instead of all this noob spam.

Indeed. I think a lot of the prof ignorance not just on this board but on a lot boards is due the new grinding methode and free respecs.
When I first mastered pikeman, it took me a little over 2 months. During that time, i was lucky if i could find even a health buff from a doc, and it was at most only +900, my best armor was bone armor at 15% resists, there was no chef food, stims were low grade, and my wep was horrible compared to todays standards. On a good kill, I would get 1200xp, and that would be solo against a dewback, which took about 5 minutes. Needless to say, I had to learn how to use all of my abilities effectively just to survive.
Regrinded pikeman a couple months ago (for the 4th time), and it took me literally 3 hours to go from novice to master. All you need to do is tap a creature once and you get 5-6k xp in a grind group. I spent more time travelling to trainers than actually fighting. Its pretty sad. I get tells all the time in game from master pikeman asking me how specials attacks work. From "why cant I sweep all the time" to "what does warcry do" it gets frustrating.
People arent taking the time to learn their char because it doesnt take any time to master it.

hmmm he is using mando wine/ crispc(cant spell)/ steak, and pikkatta pie, bout all i see for his foods. As for his mentioned temp earlier, that is correct from what i saw. Though it could be improved with xx41 in swordsman(gives +10 acc and crit strike) with the loss of the acc FS line(i know a little less acc, but makes up with crit strike) No doubt 75% AB slices, though i did see him ab'd most of the time. his healing was impessive, was healing like 1.5k prob healing eff bio shirt. If you noticed from the 1st vid, when he didnt have steak on for teh 1st 20 seconds, he was getting hit 700s, which is natural( i always slap steak on when fighting jedi) after that, he was doing great, just the numbers add up after awhile. He keeps his food stomache mostly empty for steak(good strategy). I noticed he likes to focus on 1 person and incap/kill them quickly,by doing area kd, and just letting loose on 1. The great staff has almost exactly the same stats as my ph( mine is 597 1088 83(unpuped) sac 2.7 speed) Persnoaly, ive never tanked like that, so i may fiddle round with my nuilder tonight.
The prices of Mando wine on Bria went up alot, hard stuff to get.

i dont waist my time on mando wine, and any good pvper these days know that filling is important... on a side note.. pvp these days are about numbers usuallly.. the only thing that distinguishes a vet player from a noob with a new template is the duration of time they last in battle... a vet will last longer and a newer player will pop dead ... that being said you need the right foods for this .. the ones i took in that video were... caf... blob candy... wafers(all 3 last a hour + so you wont have any filing)... steak .. crispic.. rubie and booster for the spice.
