I can't begin to say how wrong you are. I've been a chef as long as I've been a pikewoman. It takes much more strategy for the crafting. After all, would you use the 957/863/522 wheat or the 585/892/920 wheat for this particular recipe? Well, if I put the first in the component dough, and then use the latter for the final mix.... well... you get the point (or maybe not) . Further, getting those resources has so far involved buffs, armor, trips to the clone center, med center, cantina, decay on my 75 % Ubese, and grouping. (I don't do spice)
You may find it boring, but until you've become a master with a global reputation for what you do, don't belittle how difficult something is.

I'm a former doctor my dear. I know all about crafting and harvesting and trying to find the right resource for the right component. I'll tell you this much. As much as I hated harvesting resources and meat. As much as I hated sitting in front of a damned machine whilst my friends were out killing stuff. As much as I hated having to go from planet to planet to find junk just so my bloody stim packs would have an extra 30 base heal. As much as I hated having to sit through critical failures, one after the other. NONE OF IT, and believe you me I meannone of it, compares with the stress and the hardship of a combat profession.
When you put together all your components into you final product and BAM, critical failure. Oh poo. You're out a few creds and a few minutes worth of work. Now compare that to a guy whos been fighting a critter for 10 minutes using up stims and wear and tear on his weapons and armor only to have that critter kill him when hes a hit or two away from killing it. Off to the cloning facility where his items all decay, as well as he has to re-insure all his stuff. Then its off to the cantina to heal up his mind wounds and battle fatigue, if he happens to be in a place where there is an entertainer. Then sidle over to the med center where he has to sit and wait for his wounds to be healed, hopefully by a medic if he can find one. Now after all this, imagine this same person going out to the same creature and having this whole scenario repeat itself. Therein lies the hardship of a combat profession. I'll take critical failures any day of the week and twice on Sundays over repeated trips to the cloning facility/med center/cantina.
Thats hard.
Oh yeah, I forgot about buffs at 6-10k a pop and spice at up to 2k a pop. All gone when you bite the biscuit.

I believe legwand is referring more to gaining levels in a crafting profession, where the only risk is venturing out to your harvesters (assuming you harvest your own). Whereas Pikeman (and other melee professions) are subjected to risk constantly. A critical fail on some recipie that you grind isnt nearly as bad as getting aced repeatedly (where theres wounding, bf, and decay involved). Crafting does indeed have it's own unique challenges, but since it's rare to find anyone selling anything at a level that's not master, its not usually a concern during the experience gaining process to do much distinction between the quality of resources.
I think one of the primary things that causes some people not to see the difficulty Pikemen/women face is specifically BECAUSE they go purchase the best armor they can find and stay buffed all the time. Wearing armor and being buffed shouldn't be required to make a class viable, but it is the easy way, and so people take it.
