Here is the post I referred to. And I wouldn't say our defenses are that great, but the damage is.
And really, as long as buffs and armor are the way they are, the fact that block is 50% less effective doesn't matter that much.

Ok...block dodge counter attack order worst to best left to right
BLOCK..stops some damage and lets you continue fighting...pikes and rifles (makes sense)
DODGE...you step out of the way but you waste some valuable time...fencers and pistoleers (makes sense)
COUNTERATTACK...lets you step out of the way and lay some damage...swords and carbines (no sense in that)
Dodge is, yes, slow but for a tanker, needed. Block won't do too much in pve, and Counterattack...well ive nvr went for swords so i dunno

block halfs the damage and delivers it to the bracers (or gloves if u wear the 4 part comp set up)..when i was caped with pikeman i blocked 19/20 hits which is very nice.
dodge dodges and none of the attack goes through
and i dont know about counter

counterattack also makes your next attack un-dodge/block/counter-able, you can still miss though

Block = 50% damage reduction
Dodge = 100% damage reduction
Counterattack = 100% damage reduction
pretty much all have an equal chance of coming off if you are capped but dodge and counterattack are better due to the 100% damage reduction

what counterattack does btw is one of the 2 (i cant remember which exactly) you either take damage, but hit back, or recieve no damage and hit back. i forgot which one it was. counterattack is broken i think, but 2 hand counterattack isnt
2hand counterattack on the other hand is good with a few tapes. i have a few upgrades to it and found myself counterattacking nearly everytime the force sensitive npc's on dantooine landed a hit. but im also a fencer, so i get theire dodge and swordsman counterattack depending on what im using.

dodge and counterattack reduces 100% of the damage
block only reduces the damage by 50%

swordsmen and carbineer.
Watch carbineer come the combat balance...it will be better then riffleman imho.
And I'd rather have 100+ Dodge over block and 100+ Counterattack over block also...block seems to not always works properly...

Intended :-
Dodge 100% no damage
Block 50% + states get through
Counter No defence but you deal damage back (Doubling your ROF I might add)
Working now :-
Dodge & Counter 100% no damage
Block 50% + states get through (Nice to know one thing in riflemans working OK

and from what i understand, our highest damaging attack ( hit 3) has a modifier that is somewhere between .5 and 1 lower than some of the other proffessions, and it also has a posture change making it unusable as a major damage dealer in PvP
