It isnt worth it, of course my character is a wookie and I CAN'T use ANY armor, so I may be biased.

Could anyone list the benefits of wearing armor, along with the negatives?

Buy the helmet first! So you can survive the only move everybody use in PVP: mind shot!!

Don't bother with the rest of the armor.

Now, I have the opportunity to buy some marine armor via faction points, but I hear tell of folks who NEVER use any armor due to encumbrance, etc.

Is it worth the FP to get some armor?

I must admit that I don't know the marine armors stats. From my experience the use of armor depends on your fighting style and what or who you are fighting.

Of course encumberance can be a real pain, but you've got to weigh that against the benefits.
For example: you fight a lot of critters that attack with kinetic (melee) only and you yourself use any given marksman weapon. Most of the time the critter won't even be able to touch you before you wipe it out. Armor doesn't really make sense in that case.

BUT: Reverse the roles: You are a melee based fighter and try to attack some human(oid) ranged fighter. By the time you reach your prey you've taken at least two or three hits from him. So to minimize the damage on the way to your target armor makes a lot of sense.

Of course, your fighting style is important too. Do you use a lot of specials? If so, what kind. Which pool do you need to "protect" and what would the encumberance on that pool be.

As you can see the question whether to use armor or not is not a plain yes or no. In the end it is all up to you and your style of play/fighting.

Hope this helps a little.

If you spam combat specials (i.e. leg shot, health shot) then I would advise not wearing armor. However if your more of the kneel down and normal shot then encumbrance will be an almost non-factor.

Personally I would wear armor only against yellow or red mobs. And remember bone armor is vulnerable (basically your armor is non-existent) against Kinetic. So attacking creatures with bone armor is definatly not worth it. Thought I would point this out because I see so many players in full bone armor attacking wrix, gurrcats, etc...

I'm not sure about the FP but armor in general is well worth it but situational, as explained above.

Just to give you an idea I get hit by a Krayt for 2,600 and my composite absorbs 1,900 of that. I can take about 5 hits like that instead of being dead in 2 hits without armor.

(p.s. yes, im doctor buffed).

pros - it can substantially reduce the amount of damage you take per hit.

cons - encumbrance means your HAM bars won't regen as fast. During a typical short encounter, this is a non-issue. As mentioned above though, if you spam special moves or throw lots of traps and whatnot it may be of more interest to you.

Personally i wear armor mostly all the time despite the encumbrance. Reason being i find the encounters to be short enough that the slower regen rates dont matter. I can remove the armor after the encounter, regen, and put it back on. However there are times when my pet tanks for me and i'm fighting a single creature where I know i'm not going to take any hits (thanks to my pet). In this case sometimes i remove the armor so i can fire off more specials but this is only relevent against larger creatures where i'm going to be engaged for a while.
