Thread: AFK musicians buffing your will/focus for free! (Beat that)

Recently, more and more fellow gamers asked for free musician buffs from me. Guess what? There has been one big guild using AFK musicians/dancers to promote their shopping mall, which is not very far away from my favorite venue. Free mind/willpower/focus buffs to all their potential customers, while taking away a very large portion of my audience! How outrageous.

Theirlogic is simple. Whenever they're not playing their jedi characters, they just log on their musicians/dancers, activate theirautojoin/autobuff macros, and go AFK for a long long time. That's good enough to persuade people to visit their vendors and spend a few bucks. Nevertheless, people are having less and less respect for paid buffs and true musicians because of that.

"Do something about it," I said to myself. Or is there anything I can do?

There's recently been a group of us vigilante dancers (LOL!) that have been a little annoyed because of the same thing cropping up all over the galaxy. What we do is go to these afk buff bots and group them together, since they are on auto-join. That way they cannot be grouped by those seeking an afk passive buff. Then we make one of them the leader and disband ourselves, leaving no trail.

Might earn you some enemies if you get caught, but it works!

All they have to do is put in a /disband that kicks off every cycle. You can only really combat it if you stand next to them the whole time.

I have a lot of friends who give me presents because they appreciate what I can do for them and that I spend a lot of my time keeping them buffed. They work really hard to find clothing attachments that are + Musical Mind Enhancement, and I've gotten one or two all by myself. That's the only way I can compete. I'm at +19 so far, and as soon as I can get a jacket made with bio-tissue for taming in it so that I can pull out that +2 musical mind enhancement buried under +3 taming, I'll be at +20 (replacing my current +1 jacket). That is the only way I know of to combat buffbots...work on finding SEAs to enhance my skills.

Unfortunately, large guilds can and do camp the places where tapes drop and give all the entertainer ones to their buffbots. It's depressing. I'm not in a guild and don't want to tie myself down like that. Like Lando, I'm a small operation not under anyone's jurisdiction. But it's getting harder and harder all the time to compete against large guilds' buffbots.

Until there's an auto-disconnect timer that boots you out and can't be gotten around without violating the EULA, we're ultimately screwed. And then, the EULA would have to be enforced. So...we're ultimately screwed.

Devs recently stated that the way afk is being used in game(by a lot of folks) is not the way they intended it and it is not healthy for the game. They are apparently doing their famous "looking into" routine. So hopefully by next year this kind of stuff will be history. The real kicker is that I don't know if afk entertainers are the main reason for their concern. It probably has a lot to do with the afk combat and Jedi leveling that has been going on.

I suppose it's true about using /disband. Can you tell I hardly ever do macros? I didn't even think of that. However, if I understand macro'ing correctly (which quite possibly I don't), it seems like this would still be a frustration for the buffbots, or at the very least, those looking for a buff because you'd have to time the /disband properly within your macro. If you timed a /disband every 10 minutes, then the buffee might be disbanded after only 2 minutes or 7 minutes or partially into the buff, and not get the full buff. If you time the /disband to happen after a longer period of time, say 30 minutes to an hour, then you can still tie up the buffbot for awhile.

Granted, grouping together is not a perfect method to combat buffbots, but you can at least get some joy knowing that you have screwed around with them for a little bit.

When you don't have time to be around, you can always become an afkinvite bot. There are macro commands to select the last people who you've targeted in sequence so all you'd have to do is click on each of the macrotainers who have autojoin and they would group up with you then you have the last target you go to become leader with /makelead. Of course, this method in itself is notrecommended because IMHO it violates the same unenforced SOE policy we are attempting to protest.

The macro system in this game is a beautiful tool, I love how it helps toenhance certain aspects of the game, but I'm afraid much of it will have to go in order to effectively preserve the game. I assume SOE created this game intending for people to play it--not much sense in making a game if people aren't going to play it, and unfortunately this macro system allows for people to not play the game which (in a slightly stretched bit of logic) means these people are using an in-game feature for an unintended purpose something which is specificly stated as an exploit. Hopefully SOE comes up with some way to fix this exploit without destroying too many of the tools we have for macroing.
