(I posted this in the In Concept thread about audience interaction. Just thought I'd share with the other musicians.)
Here's my two creds on the entertainer-audience interaction:
First off, player interactionshould NEVER be forced. It should be encouraged, though. If interaction happens, it happens. If not, no big deal.
Perhaps the devs could come up with a way for a player to select 1-2 favorite songs for their character that provide a bonus? Whenever they are listening to those songs, they heal much quicker. (Conversely, they must also select 1-2 disliked songs which make them heal slowly.)
Also, perhaps tie the /watch and /listen animations to the /flourish command. e.g. when the watcher is watching they get the standard clapping in front. However, when the entertainer does a favorite flourish (again, specified on the character sheet by the watcher.) the watcher does the over the head clapping animation (and gets a healing/buff bonus). That way there is no 'request', but the entertainer has to keep an eye out for which audience members are clapping over their heads more and can tailor the performance. Sort of a simon-says, but without all the nasty pop-ups.
That's how it works more like RL. Audiences have favorites which the performers don't know about. But they still have to cater to the crowd and watch the crowd for reactions to the performance. Could also tied it to favorite instruments. Some folks love the guitar, others love sax, and some folks love the drums. Have them list these things in their character sheet and let the performers figure out what the audience likes. The perferences aren't visible on /examine and if the audience just says what they like in spatial, that at least opens the door to conversation. (Why do you like that particular song? Hey, I love that, too! I know X person who likes that, too, etc.)
Also, it could be tied to faction. Perhaps when playing SW3 members of the Imperial faction (Covert and overt) receive faster healing and better buffs?
This shouldn't be too difficult to code since playback droids can obviously figure out which song and instrument you are playing.
Just an idea...

I like the idea... favorite/least favorite songs is a great idea I think. Not so sure about the flourishes, might be kinda cool but might just be more code for the same effect.

/denyservice is always a fun one too... especially when you don't tell them. They go afk for 20 minutes and come back to find they haven't healed at all.

I like the "favorites" idea. I'd like it even more if we really had a big repertoire for people to choose from. I'm not all that worried about the play-my-favorite tune spam; I think that might make the cantina feel more like a cantina.
Other comments?

I think that this is a fantastic idea. I like the idea that the entertainers have to pay attention to the audience.

Good ideas, but I'd fear the same problems with this as stated before about the"do flourish 7" thing.
If there is a healing or buffing bonus involved for a favorite song/dance or flourishes in there, wouldn't we start hearing the l337 and pseudo-l337demands of "play SW3, with flourish 3 and 5 NOW NOW NOW I'M IN A HURRY NOW NOW!!!"?
A more mature player would never do this, of course. But then again, if the server populations were full of people who wouldn't do this, we likely would still be tipped for healing, wouldn't have buffbots, and perhaps the game would be shuttling along 'as intended'.

1337 or pseudo-1337... welcome to /addignore
I doubt the devs would remember to put in an /ignore function for a flourish pop-up window like TH suggested
