Thread: What to do about AFKers...
I don't spend much time on these boards... as you can see from my post count. Which most people seem to think makes you stupid about the game... Funny, I would think that if you have a massive post count, you are spending you time here instead of in the game... My post count is low, because I spend my time playing the game, not talking about playing the game... but I digress...
As someone who plays the game, let me point out a few facts about SWG and these kinda of games in general...
As long as these games exist, people will find ways to run their characters AFK as long as there is something to be gained from it.
Right now, the thing to be gained for the AFKers is Holo-Grinding. I'd say that 90% of the AFK entertainers out there right now are in fact grinding... maybe higher. Every time I come out to these (entertainer/musician/dancer) boards, I see post after post and thread after thread on how bad AFKing is and what is SOE going to do about it.
Their response to you should be something on the order of: "WHHAAAAAAA... get over it and find a way to deal with it", instead it was: "We are getting right of Holo-gringing". But apparently it didn't register with you, that they answered your cry.
I came here tonight because I wanted to see what the top 5 issues were and was hoping one of them was getting buffs straigtened out. And here I see AFKing still one of the top 5 issues.
The Devs are already dealing the the issue... do you not know how to put 2 and 2 together?
(2)The primary cause of AFKing is due to hologrinding...
(+)
(2)Holo-grinding (professions) will be completely gone in less then 2 months (publish 9 to be exact) Or so the plan is.
(=) AFKing (in cantinas) will be 90% gone in less than 2 months.
So what are you going to do about the other 10%?
A few months ago I brought this issue up and got a bunch of flame attacks, so I'll try again from a different approach...
When I brought it up before, one of the things I suggested was "move away from the cantina's where the grinders were".
I got 2 responses to this, one good and one bad...
The bad: /whine "We shouldn't have to move"
The good: "We have to stay there cause that's where the people who need healing are at."
When holo grinding goes away, we will be left with only "real" entertainers. People will go where ever they are at that point. Make no mistake. With some of the new content SOE is putting in, they need for us is going to be even greater than it is now.
Well personally, I want them coming to me in my own home for a change. Or in this case, my own city. Where I control who can or cannot join my entertainer group, or even come in the building. You don't like an AFKer, ban em from you cantina.
See, not only am I a Musician, I'm also a Mayor so I am extra interested in have them come to me. It promotes traffic in my city, which helps revenues for the city, and traffic for the vendors, etc, etc...
So instead of crying about how to stop AFKers...
Let's "band" together (forgive the pun) and move out to the player cities, and leave the NPC cities behind. Personally I will be recruiting pretty heavily for my city. I'm know I'm gonna need a dancer to work with me in my cantina.
If you must be here on the boards instead of the game, lets work on things like:
1) Getting the buff system redone... It's a freaking mess right now. We need shorter buff times, a progress monitor, and a finish message for both the performer and the customer.
2) /tipband How stupid is it that they listen to one person in a band, yet then get the benifit of the whole band, and they can't /tip the whole band in one shot.
3) Get the "register with location to work right". This will be critical when we all move out to our player cities.
4) Not having to target the Nalargon and the Ommni. This issue drives me freaking nuts. No emotes, no exaimes to read bios, no interacion with anything else.
5) Getting Theatres out of the game. Oops, did I say that one aloud? hmm, oh well.. since I did, can anyone tell me the point of them? I can't stand them personally, the only use I've seen for them is to make a great spot for PvP operations when you are raiding a player city. Everyone seems to like to hide in the theatres. How are they supposed to be different than the Cantinas?
6) New Instrument sounds and more songs. The music in the game is truely awesome, I'd like more of it.
7) Here's one the politicians will love: Make it so that if there is a band playing in a player city cantina, that people can hear music either when they enter the city (like when you enter a starting city) Or it can be heard for some range around the cantina. Or maybe this would be a good use for the Theatre, that would make more sense
8) Make crafting instruments mean something. Let experiementation mean something.
Last time I told people to stop whining about AFKers, I was told to contribute... hope this helps...
So is this post a rant about anti-AFKers or a Top X issue list.
Why don't you check out the "stickied" lists of our top issues...specifically...

WraythOSU:
I thank you for your concerned and detailed post about the unattended phenomenon. However, the hologrinders do not really bother me as much as the dedicated unattended buffers. While hologrinders may go away, these characters stay, giving out everything I can 24/7 for free to anyone who wants free, 30second master level buffs. The problem will only get more and more grave.
And sadly, it is the player cities that are at the forefront of the buffbot phenomenon. The ownership ofan increasing number ofcities feel it is in their interest to buy and maintain an extra account specifically for unattended buffing for their cities and their guilds. This problem, unless unattendedness is somewhat mitigated, will not make being an entertainer any easier.
