Thread: Which came first, the chicken or the egg?

I don't know the answer and don't care, but one isn't going away without the other going away also.
Chicken = buffbots
Egg = lack of available buffing entertainers
(or switch the two, as it's not important)
People often justify their use of buffbots by saying that there aren't any available buffing entertainers. They say "as soon as there are live entertainers readily available to provide the buff, we'll stop using the buffbots."
But entertainers won't be readily available as long as these buffbots exist. For whatever reasons (the reasons don't matter, because I'm simply explaining the effects), the existence of buffbots is a high enough deterrent to live entertainers that they drop the profession or not fully pursue it.
Without the ability to create a buffbot, guess what would happen? People would see the demand for mind buffs, and take up the profession. Not as a bot, but as a player. There might be a split between 'buffing entertainers' and 'social entertainers,' but the buffers would begin to exist. The same way the bots came into existence, except without the bot part because in this fantasy, the bot functionality is impossible.
But as long as the bots exist, the live buffers won't. All arguments and flames aside, it simply won't happen.
So please don't say "hey, just start buffing live, we won't use the bots" and don't say "hey, live buffers are available, you just aren't looking hard enough."
Neither statement is true, and I doubt it will become true until there's a cost associated with buffing, or am impossibility for buffing to occur afk. Even with a cost, it might not go away.
BTW, if my points aren't clear, it's because it's extremely loud and crowded where I am right now, and my thoughts aren't easy to hear even in my own head.

I think you hit the nail squarely on the head with this one. Its the reason you cannot find anyone at 3AM who is live to service the galaxy. There is simply no incentive for anyone to pursue these professions when the ratio of customers to entertainers is something like 5 entertainers to every customer at 3AM. How else can I explain why my friends list maybe shows one or two players at wee hours, as opposed to about 12 known buffbots?

The recursive macro came first. Without that, no buffbots.

First came not wanting to to feed the guard dog to keep away the foxes(aka they didn't want to put forth the money to pay more people to service their customers and try and watch for 3rd party macros)

So they put their own home raised fox to watch the Chickens(put in thier macro system)

The fox invited a few friend foxes in. They killed a few chickens and eggs and then dressed up in the feathers so the farmer wouldn't notice. (they started afking fully automating the game which killed off some newcomers and old timers)

Then the farmer open the doors to the chicken coop and left a trail of crumbs to the fox lairs.(aka hologrind)

The farmer kept saying he didn't like all his chickens and eggs being killed by foxes but still he left the coop doors open and still left the fox in charge

There are a few eggs and a few chickens left now but it's hard to find them among the carnage of dead bodies and broken eggs and of course among the foxes all dressed like chickens dancing away and squawking their little tunes

the foxes all get a good laugh out of it and the chickens that are left try and stay quite and not get noticed as the foxes might very well eat them. And all the eggs that hatch... well they think they are all foxes dressed like chickens so they act just like the foxes do.

I have no idea what any of that means but I couldn't stop myself from writing so I figured someone might get a little laugh out of it.

Here's another metaphor. We can't stop murder, no matter how many laws we make, or how many jails we build, people will continue to murder each other. So... let's make murder legal, and in order to make it fair, let's issue a free handgun to everyone on the planet. Now, we have a lot of murders. Hm, maybe we should come up with a way to encourage people to stop murdering each other, like tax breaks or something maybe?

All perfectly ridiculous.

Let's continue the metaphor by adding that we'll go on the news occasionally and say that we think that murder is bad for society, and that we've talked about that several times up at the capitol building. Hmm... yes, we've mentioned that over coffee.
