Thread: Nifty Idea...that's right NIFTY
Now my character isn't a musician, but I think it would be a cool little feature to be able to drop your favorite mp3 file into your swg character folder and be able to play a real song. Anyone who 'listens' like normal could hear "Wildside" by Motley Crue, or "Detriot Rock City" by KISS....you get the idea.

Its all about the bandwidth and server storage capacity.
Ever download an MP3? it takes a minute or two with a decent internet connection, more with a dial-up. There are only two options to implement this idea and here they are:
1. Store all the MP3's on the server and force all players to download them when someone starts to play one within hearing range. This will decrease system performance and increase lag for a minute or two with a decent internet connection, more with a dial-up. Not only that, but now they have to buy several thousand gigabytes woth of storage devices to store all those MP3's as well as licenses to use them. Guess who will have to pay for those things.... I'll give you a clue.... The person who will have to pay for those things won't be Sony.
2. Store the MP3's on your own computer and force the musicians who are playing them to upload them to the server then all players within hearing range to download them. Again there is severe lag, and decreased system performance. You may not need to buy an additional hard drive to store the MP3's but you will have to prove to Sony that you have the legal right to have them on your computer and are not pirating music.
Then the MP3s would have to be deleted from all the player's computers because they don't have a legal right to keep them. On top of that, you have the censoring for the players that are not deemed to be mature enough for some of the content.
All in all, this would be a great idea if I actually wanted to listen to your favorite music instead of mine, there were no legal issues, no bandwidth problems, AND there was no extra cost to me.
