yes, you get better xp with better instruments. It's always best to use the highest ranked instrument that you are able to use if going for xp. Also, in the end, the 4 horns that you use in the entertainer field have the exact same sound as the 2 horns in the musician field. Your best bet to get the fastest xp gain is to go entirely up the Music Knowledge tree before starting on the Music Techniques tree. With this you will always be able to use the best instrument available, as well as more songs.

If you mean with "better" instruments a better quality...
no --- quality of the instruments does not matter in the moment.
If you mean higher up in the Knowledge tree...
yes --- this matters much. always upgrade to the newest available

My apologies for not being clear there. I did mean higher in the knowledge tree.

Did you mean "quality" of instrument or "level" of instruments?
You do always want to play the highest level of instrument that you can play when you are going for xp.
As for the "quality" of instrument -- I have never been able to tell if the quality of components make any difference when you make instruments. I don't think that they do. I also don't believe that experimentation makes a difference when you make instruments. Is there anyone else who knows for sure?

Instrument quality and experimentation currently has no effect on gameplay, as far as I know.I have asked the devs to implement such an effect, maybe in connection with the buff. Doesn't seem like a high priority for them. ![]()
Yes, playing a more "advanced" instrument makes for faster XP, supposedly. My Musician is at the XP cap, so I no longer have firsthand knowledge, but that's the way it used to work. (Actually, my Musician on TC isn't capped, and last night he played a slitherhorn for fun; it seemed to garner him less XP than the nalargon.)
