Thread: *IDEA* Composing Music/Open-ended Flourishes?

I'd like to throw around an idea for the possible future development of the music profession. I dont know about you, but I workedto master musician becauseI love music. I liked Star Wars Galaxies because it had the best musical proffesion of the otther MMOs Iv'e played. You can actuall MAKE music combos, rather than the same soundbyte played over and over again.

For the future of the music profession, I'd like to see some open-ended flourishes. Master Musicians should be able to compose music. Here is what might be cool.

- It would be a whole new song.

- As usual, there would bethedefault music andslots for 8 flourishes (all blank).

- All Master musicians would be given a "Compose Music" skill.

- When activated, a composition menu comes up.

- This system allows the musician to make and edit the default music and each of the eight flourishes.

-Each flourish would be editable within the containment of the length of the flourish (5 secs, isnt it?).

- The listof sounds and notes will be on a selection menu given in a new patch (Ex: Mandoviol would have the selection of stringed instrument types, like violin, cello, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, etc. Once chosen you would arrange the music for the sound type.

- Each flourish would have to be composedfor each instrument individually (instrument tabs on the menu?). However, if desired, the player can just focus on one instrument for the song. Any instrument is left out in the composing will have no affect in performance.

- This blank-slate song can be played togetherwith other master musicians, however, for it to soundWELL, the musicians will have to work togetherto create a great musical peice.

*Also an idea*

The extent to which a musician can edit and compose his/her music in a sittingcould be dependent on the music exp they have collected. This way, there is a bigger motivation to play. I dont know about any of you, but whenI hit master,I kinda felt like i hit some kinda ceiling. I was like, "ok, now what?" With a composing system, there could be new meaining to our musical lives!

Hey, if they can put an action shooter into an PRG game, why cant they include a music creation system?

Would any of you would like to see this?

The ability to compose non-canned music will never, ever happen. Copyright issues. Just resign yourself to the concept.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isnt it perfectly legal for bands to play copyritten songs, as long as the performer dont sell it as their own work? I mean, if you go to any fair or musical gathering you can hear bands playing music that isnt theirs.

We've been told before that legal issues would prevent a truly open-ended creative system for music (and even if something is ultimately legal, if it's questionable, companies don't want to go through the hassle of long and expensive court actions to win their case). I think NewJedi stated once that they originally wanted to give us something where we could create our own music, but that legalities prevented it (I could be wrong on that).

However, the system you described could be used with some restrictions on how free you are in creating the music (basically just extending the idea of choosing the order of what flourishes we do now, and giving some more flexibility to it). I think it certainly could be possible to give us a system where we can be more creative than the current system allows, and still not have to worry about copyright problems. Any more brainstorm ideas on what such a system might look like?

Well for starters, I'd like to see some mor variety in the sounds of the instruments.

-Lets get some something better than the 2 different sounds for the largehandfull of diferent horns out there.

-Each instrument should keep it's sound for all songs, instead of miraculously transforming into a different-sounding instrument for each song.

-Lets see some more stringed instruments and sounds. Perhaps make one for classical stringed instrument, one for acoustic, one for electric.

-Bandfill and the omnibox are basically the same instrument, how about giving them different sounds?

-make an instrument DESIGNED for techno sounds, instead of pasting it to an instrument for a particular song.

-Doing this would give an overall porpose for crafting and owning the various instruments.

What if every created song had to pass through SOE before a musician would be able to play their song. Besides, all most people (me anyways) would want to do is create real Star Wars songs. This wouldn't be an issue since SOE already has rights to pretty much all Star Wars music.

Other than Star Wars music I would have more fun creating my own masterpieces than copy someone else's music. Then maybe sell it (at high prices ) so people can listen to it on a permanent jukebox or hologram type thing that only musicians could make and supply music for.
