Thread: Quick Question about Registering...

I am a brand new member to the Musician community and am very excited to start entertaining the masses... glad to see there's alot of people who seem to be enjoying it as much as I will! But anyways, I'm confused about the RegisterLocation command does... I know it's for "registering at a specific location" and all that, but what does this accomplish? Do you gain some benefit? Does it let other PCs know about you? Any other hints or tips on Musician are welcomed here... after all, I am new to this. Thanks.

Congratulations on your new profession. I hope you enjoy it!

As for the registering question, when you type /register in an NPC cantina, a little star/sun thing pops up next to that cantina's name on your map (ctrl V). That lets other players know that there is an entertainer in the cantina, and they can get healed there (or be amused). If you notice ones with a crescent moon next to the name, those are the cantinas without anyone registered.

I believe this also works in Player Cities when it is registered on the planetary map. I'm not entirely sure though. I tried registering at one, and it told me I was not of the correct faction. Oh well. /shrug

There are some really good posts on this forum for you to read to figure out your other questions, or just get hints. I would suggest the one on holo-grinding (although i don't recommend grinding), but it has some helpful hints. Also there was an old post about tricks for aspiring musicians. I don't remember the exact title of it....perhaps Tiaga could help out there? I believe it was his post anyway

Registration is currently utterly, completely, totally worthless. If you check the planetary map and look under Cantina or Theater they probably all have little sun symbols next to them. When the server resets, they're all set to this. That's supposed to mean that a Musician or Dancer (not first-tier entertainer) is on duty inside. Because they're all set to "staffed" status every day, and only show as 'empty' (the litte crescent moon symbol) if a Musician or Dancer has gone in, registered, and then left...that being the case, registration serves no purpose whatsoever.

If the server reset made all of them toggle to the off/unstaffed/empty icon, then there would be a point. Anyone who needed Entertainment Healing could look on the planetary map and see which cantinas had at least one performer of Novice Musician/Dancer skill on duty.

Yet another nifty idea that's borked and probably won't be fixed for a year or so.

Wow, I had no idea that they reset to "registered status." I never really check. Interesting.

Nichu, that's the problem, is that no one (especially not our customers) ever checks. and the fact that it gets auto reset to the sun (i.e. someone should be in the cantina) every day makes it even more useless for anyone to check.

I think this is one of the things on our list for the Devs. It would be a great feature if it worked properly and with a few tweaks it would be even better.

Yep, /register doesn't work right. I mentioned part of the issue in my State of the Profession report, but it was buried in a long list of other stuff. I plan to highlight it more in a "big list of bugs" message for the devs pretty soon, but probably not til we get answers to our Top Ten Questions.

Actually, NJ, it's not /register that's borked. It's the player run cantinas and theaters being set to 'staffed' every morning that's borked. NPC Cantinas and Guild Hall Theaters are fine, they're set to the crescent moon. (Which is ironically amusing to me, when I see the Coronet Cantina listed as 'empty'.)

The only bug I know of with /register itself is that you can't register in a Hotel. It's on the map, we can heal fatigue and mind wounds in there, could we please get /register to work in there?

It's one of my top ten issues with the profession, but that's because I'm not obsessing about AFK macroers. The developers have given us their answer on that particular issue and have made it clear that the couldn't care less if it's destroyed whatever modicum of respect we might ever have been able to garner as contributing healers to the game. I don't care if their Vision™ was for us to be social...they made us healers. In a fun, infinitesimally creative way, too. I suppose that's my main divergence from the rest of the performing community. I channel my desire to help others and be nice and friendly into wanting to heal, but I really, really loved that I could do it in a fun, creative way. It's the healing, and the method I'm given for doing it, that are important to me. Not that I can chat while chained inside a boring grey room. Hell, I can do that anywhere without paying any more of a subscription fee than to my ISP.

/sigh Sorry. I'll shut up now. But yeah, I think if the on/off, staffed/unstaffed status of player cantinas and theaters were fixed, and then perhaps a new loading screen got added showing how to check and see if a cantina was staffed...I think that would help a lot of little things that would carry over into making us more effective.

Well, I'll try /register again. I haven't tried itrecently. But it's never ever worked right for me. I know why it doesn't work in my Player Cantina; I'm a rebel, and the owner is an Imp. But I can't get it to work right anywhere.

Echinacea, for what it's worth, the devs don't like AFK-macroing any more than we do. At least they say they don't, and I think they're sincere. But I fully agree with you that their short-term "solution" -- getting rid of Holotainers -- is hardly going to make a dent in the problem.

What we need, of course, is new fun content that encouragesat-the-keyboard play. If it's fun to play at the keyboard, more people will play at the keyboard; and if there are XP or other rewards for doing so (anddenial of XP for AFK'ing), more people still will do so. I think we Musicians have come up with lots of cool ideas that would make at-the-keyboard fun; there are some in my AFK thread, andsome especially good ones in the new "brainstorming" thread. The trick is selling one or more of these to the devs. I've certainly tried, and I plan to keep trying.I plan to go on apretty intensive lobbying campaign for specific "new content that encourages ATK play" once we get our 10 questions back from TH.

I'm neutral. Hate PvP, refuse utterly to have anything to do with it, think it's nothing but an excuse for immature jerks to gank and grief. I have never seen it done in a way that actually promoted roleplaying. Though I admit I haven't looked too hard. (And now I'll quit quibbling and tell you how I really feel! )

That being said, I /register every single day in the two cantinas I work in most. Both are in player cities on Dantooine. Both cantina owners are, to the best of my knowledge, also factionless. Both of the cities are inhabited by citizens of both factions. I also happen to be a citizen in both cities, due to a bug that I think had to do with me placing the cantina in the second city and declaring citizenship there, which for some reason didn't take me off the rolls in the first city. I'm in both daily, so I'm not unhappy about this.

The only time I've run into the issue you're talking about, Bihlbo, is when I tried to /register in a cantina and got the message that I had to be a rebel to do so. I almost never go to that city, so it's not a deal to me. I've successfully registered in other cities' cantinas where I was not a citizen.

when I was un-guilded I had no trouble /register ing in player cantinas. that was a few weeks ago and I haven't tried it since adding a guild tag to my name.

I can't do it in my own cantina yet cause our city isn't listed on the world map (silly lvl 3 caps).

I have yet to receive the "wrong faction" message, I'll have to try again here at someone else's cantina.

I didn't even know what that sun and moon meant. Now I do. These boards are a lot better for info than any of the manuals.

Hmm, I wonder if either guilding or faction has an effect on /register, apart from the obvious -- you can't/register in a cantina owned bysomeone of the opposing faction. I suppose I could test this by resigning my guild and faction membership on my TC character. (My main is NOT leaving the Alliance, and he's guild leader, so we aren't going there. )

Echinacea, I roleplay my faction all the time! In fact, it's one of my favorite shticks as an entertainer. If I'm playing with Imps in the audience, I'll innocently mention to a bandmate that I'm planning a vacation on Alderaan. Or I'll suggest that the Emperor needs to see an Image Designer. Or that Vader needs a better tailor. (Black is slimming, Darth, but the cape has got to go.) Our resident Dancer is an Imp; she and I are always debating the great issues of the day.

For that matter, combat PvP sometimes involves RP'ing too. My favorite moment was when an Imp came across me while I was liberating an Imperial poison factory. After his AT-ST made short work of me, he cried over the bodies of the Stormtroopers I'd dispatched, and then he looked at the installation and said something like,"They make milk here, you know. Er, at least that's what I was told." I was chuckling about it all the way to the cloning facility.
