Thread: Very Simple way to fix the AFK problem

im quite sure this has been touched on, however, i might as well say it

1) Dissallow the ability to start preforming while afk

2) force auto-afk

as for #1, the code pretty much already exists, as well, they patched it in to stop afk combat, and well, as for #2, this will prevent people from disabling auto-afk and keeping thier bot running.

The problem, both with this and the combat-disabling on AFK, is the people who use AFK to block /tells. It would work better with a true indication of somebody not being there (and that doesn't really need to be shown to others).

this is very true, however, an easy way to appear afk, is to hotkey a /reply macro with AFK AUTORESPONSE: etc

would you rather have the ability to hide your atk status, or get rid of buffbots?

It's fixed. No one can listen to Dancers or Musicans while they are AFK. Problem fixed.

So? they Don't go afk, and they turn off the auto-afk Option. Besides Performing in and of itself prevents a person from going AFK..

I posted this Idea on another Thread...

1. Disbale the abiluiy to turn Auto-AFK On/Off

2. Set the AFK defalut to 15 min.

3. When AFK the /macro and /ui action tollbar commands are Disabled, and all exsiting macros are /dumped

4. Only Moving your character will prevent you from being tagged AFK.. Emotes.. Flourishes...Macroed speach.. NOTHING but moving willprevent you from going AFK..

Its a good idea...except one BIG problem.

While performing you CANNOT move. So if movingis the only wayprevent the auto AFK then you would have to stop performing every 15 minutes. I stand inplace for hours sometimes just playing. Sometimes its in a cantina chatting and helping others, sometimes its at a gig playing music. Sometimes its crafting instruments. Its all good except that moving cannot be the only way to prevent the auto afk. For entertainers though, while performing the only things we can do are chat, emote and flourish.

they need to work on changing macros before they can really get aride of the AFK problem cause someone could just have there character do a emote to keep from getting set as afk

You need to look at the bigger picture tho.. Would it REALLY kill you to stop playing for 15 scronds move and start playing again? Is is SUCH a big deal that you have to move your character to prevent it from going AFK?

Tho I guess making Actual entered Text commands stop you from going AFK would work too

No it wouldn't kill me, however it would make buffing difficult...at least doing many in a row (/think did I stop and restart 10 minutes ago or 14 minutes ago).

Performances would also suffer. Having to stop and restart on a schedule to keep a show going would be inconvienient.

Lastly.....I get chatting and I'd forget.

Actual text may be a better solution, but if you get to the point of determining actual text from macroed text....you can use the determination of macro versus anything.

A simple fix to the AFK problem that would fit into the SW feel of the game is to have ST challange players in public locations and require an answer to that challange. If after two challanges several minutes apart they do not answer then they are either whisked off for interogation or killed on the spot.

I have really thought about ways to stop afk play. With the ingame macro system it would be near impossible, and really I do not want to lose the macro system in its totality.

Recursive macros - It would be nice for them to not allow the /ui action toolbar slot 10 (wrong syntax on purpose) however this would stop a lot of useful macros like changing clothes/armor, weapons, using items from the toolbar, etc.

Calling a macro from a macro - My biggest problem with this is some of my songs are a bunch of macros placed together, I have one main macro thats name is the name of the song, then i have it call several others like the verse, refrain etc. It saves on typing let me tell you.

Disabling the auto afk feature- This is nice until you realize that the afk is taken off when any /emote etc is given. There is no difference between macroed commands and live typed commands. It is all the same to the server, and a lot of us entertainers would get booted every 15 minutes.

Any solutions will have to have multiple stops, and in the end will inconvenience us no matter what it is.

This idea does have merits and I have been thinking along these lines recently as well.

If the ability to disable the AFK status was stopped and as you say the timer was set to a fixed length, you could then disable the ability to do any skill animation, or put any text into any public chat chanel, while AFK.

The next question is how do you detect if someone if AFK? I would say it could be done client side by detecting keystrokes/mouse clicks. Sure this can be gotten around by using a 3rd party program, but if they did that they would be breaking the ToS and could be banned.
