Thread: AFK Free Zones
I have been reading the boards with much interest, I have been working on Master Musician for a little while now. I finally broke down and went to Coronet and tried to get in a group. There I found a sea of entertainers half of them AFK, in fact it was flowing over into the hallways too.I tried to join a group but was told it was full and to play somewhere else.
I would like to throw out asuggestion.
Make the Cantina'san AFK Free Zone. Those who wish to go afk must do so in other places.
"Jaeo"
I think group leaders should be ruthles with AFK's - I have no problem with them playing in the group but they will always get kicked for a live player - no question.
I do get annoyed with those who stay out of group and play in the midle of the bar - go to the side or somewhere else. Masters should have ability to remove and silence AFK's so they do not ruin the session everyone else is playing.
please read this post cause it is much the same idea but with a plyable system for it:

We have been talking about this at the dancer board for some time, though as we know that people need to go afk in order to level up.
I'm not quite sure I follow.. People can gain skills without ever going AFK. It isn't needed at all.
We propose player city cantina's be able to declear there cantina as afk free. I don't know how well that is going but we could use the musican board to support a similar idea
You can do this now. My cantina is such a place. SO let me give you my insight on how well it works...
It doesn't. Not well, at least. The cantina does get a good number of people coming back, but not much healing. So the result is people end up with tech and knowledge maxxed, but almost no healing xp. So they either end up taking several months to get master (No exxageration) or they suck it up and go to the AFK hotspots. Plus, new players will come in and go to NPC cantinas, and will be met with the AFK beast, so they might be turned off to the profession they might have enjoyed.
if you get afks in your group just do a /stopband they will stop, and kick them or enjoy that you are getting more xp for having them. I am not against afk entertainers however , when im afk i go to my player city cantina because its a ghost town and i like to think i provide a free service to those in need of heals
An AFK Free zone is not needed.
If you don't like it, go somewhere else. Why does everyone do it? Because group leaders allow it. Why do they go to the cantina? Because that is where we've trained the customer to go a running for mind healing.
Go to the hotel! Go to the theatre! Start a wave of change on your server that players WHO ARE NOT AFK work in these other places. Remember Master Musicians? Remember playing with them? This could return if those who care about music do something about it, instead of waiting for SOE to invent some new policy and patch for this.
AFK has gotten much worse since the Holo Gift, now everyone dreams of being a Jedi, but first they need to grind through MM. Fine. Teach these new entertainers that it ain't cool to go AFK (especially if you're the leader).

Too true. Getting rid of AFK entertainers completely would be much better.

If people start going there, and the hurt start going there, then eventually the AFK people will start going there to get the best xp. The problem with the "go somewhere else" idea is now you're saying "You can have the best xp, or you can have fun, but you can't have both." It's no wonder people don't like the profession if they can't gain decent xp AND have fun, because the places with decent xp just aren't any fun.
The other big problem here is that new players won't know to go somewhere else. Anyone who has watched the movies know you need to go to the cantina. I'm sure the new player help tells you somewhere, but that was so long ago I forgot. First impressions mean a lot - but this class presents the absolute worst first impression. Horrible sounding, uncoordinated entertainers who aren't even really there.

This I agree with. Unfortunately it will just teach them to put /join in their macro, and stand in the hallway so people will see them first. One time a group leader thought someone wasn't AFK because they accepted the group invite. I had to explain to them some of the tricks people use to make others think they aren't AFK.
