Nal is like that too cool to look at ohhs and awws when whip it out but hard to be social with and chat and nod and all the other stuff entertainers do
As i am running out of skill points mm is the first i will give up because of the targeting issues and just bring it down to bandfill
the always targeted is a pain

You can still do that stuff. You don't have to have someone targeted in order to do an emote. If you want to nod, type /nod <players name>. You don't even have to type their whole name, just like the first 3 or 4 letters. It's really not that hard.

I think this mechanic is a side effect of the fact that multiple (up to 4) people can play the same ommni or nala. Because you don't actually equip the instrument you have to keep it targeted so that the system knows that you are interacting with it. Of course this doesn't change the fact that this is still a pain to deal with.

if you do an effect or emote and click back quick like the bunny you can still stay playing. not sure the timing element since it stopped giving xp on the ticks when I maxed music and ent heal xp.

A good side effect of this that you learn a lot about the SWG command line. You can do just about anything to a person without actually targetting them. The only thing I have found you can't do is see their HAM bars. Some examples:
A character named Zedd walks in.
Welcome: /wel zedd
Smile: /smi zedd
Read his bio: /exam zedd
The character names do fuzzy matching on the end, so if a character names Snuffarapalifalon walks in:
/wel snuf
works fine. If more than one person matches, I think it goes by alphabetical order, but I haven't tested it. It works the same way with slash commands, too, hence /wel instead of /welcome (actually I think /we is sufficient). The only bad think is that emotes like /smile will cause you to point at the person, so you will become askew on your ommni. The only way I have found to fix it is to zoom your view all the way in, and then zoom back out. With my newfound command line knowledge, I can outwelcome any entertainer in the galaxy
Happy entertaining!

actually ventri is setup for a command line target.
/ventril target;
the problem is the target doesn't work, it goes by who you have selected.

one other thing you can't do from the command line is target the ventriloquism effect.
