Thread: Instruments Idea... Just for Fun
They will NEVER add it where you can upload your own songs, like you said copyright.. and it would make me quit this game.. Think about it.
You walk into a cantina, and hear Eminem(SP?) How the hell does that fit into the SW Universe? I mean, someone could upload some pretty nasty things also, like a recording of them doing something bad.
And think about the bandwith, its bad enough already in a cantina, MIDI's are about 20 k right? So lets say you are on dial up, you walk in and you are constanly getting 2 k packets telling where people are, and what they are doing. And then all the dance flourishs, and crap.. then to add that you must dowload a 20 k file, that will just waste space on your HD, because there would be no way for the SWG client to know that someone else is playing it, unless the other person named it the same thing. Then think about security, what would you do if they figured out some way to transmit virus' like that?!?
This may not be the topic to complain, and Im NOT flaming you, or anyone else.. Im just voicing my opinion about this subject since it was mentioned here.
The music in SWG for entertainers and musicians is great. What I'd like to see (or hear, rather) is more instrument sounds. There are only five real "instruments" in the game which I call Alpha Horn (Slitherhorn, Fanfar, & Traz), Beta Horn (Fizzz, Kloo, & Chidinkalu), Boomer (Bandfill & Ommni Box), Mandovial, and Nalargon.
What would be nice is if each of the repeat instruments played a slightly different sound. For example, each of the Alpha Horns would become separate instruments... the Slitherhorn would be a recorder, the Fanfar a flute, and the Traz would remain a clarinet. Beta Horn would be slightly more difficult (as it is often different instruments, sounding like brass in Starwars1 but more like a saxophone or oboe in the other song) but could potentially be broken down the same way with the Fizzz sounding like a french horn or trumpet, the Kloo Horn sounding like an oboe, and the Chidinkalu sounding like a trombone. For the boomers, the bandfill could remain the same but an ommni box would add in additional sounds like timpani, xylophones, and glockenspiel. The two master instruments could potentially be broken into three instruments each. Master Entertainer would keep the strings with three instruments that sound like violin, harp, and electric guitar. The Nalargon would break up into three that sound like piano, pipe organ, and the existing electronica sounds.
I realize, of course, this would likely be prohibitively expensive and potentially impossible from a developers standpoint. Laying down new tracks for each instrument would be quite costly (assuming live musicians were used for the originals). There are also other potential flaws but I thought it was a neat little "what if?" idea that I would share. Perhaps somebody from the development end could look into it and this idea could be included with the space flight add-on, allowing the players to absorb the costs.
This is a good idea, I want to see more songs available (lets face it until you get to jazz they are pretty crappy) and the ability to upload new songs as midi's (yeah all sorts of copyright issues I know). As musicians its a little boring entertaining with a set of half a dozen songs some of which are so bad. An in game music creation engine (or even an add on, I might pay a small amount) is maybe whats needed, some simple loops and breaks that players (master or at least composer) can assemble and then the band group can play them.
Come on SOE MORE SONGS for us to play please - its tuff earning a living as a musician giging your way round the galaxy

Actually, a way to handle this would be to have a song submission contest. The top winners would get three free months of game play (appropriate waiver forms for intellectual property being signed).
What would be fun in terms of adding new songs would be to restructure Musician the way they're doing Creature Handler and make each column a different branch of musical style (e.g. Contemporary, Formal, Traditional, etc.). If you had a new song in every single box of musician you'd have 18 musician songs while keeping the 5 entertainer songs as-is (on the debate of Ceremonial, I see nothing wrong with duplicating it on MM but Mandovial should stay on ME).
Another thing that could make things interesting is to change the songs to be a bit like MODs. A MOD is a sequence of musical "tracks" that use encapsulated samples, providing better sound quality than a MIDI (unless you want to spend $600 for a professional sound card). Said samples and instrument track information would be saved locally on the users' hard drives to reduce network latency issues. You allow for on-the-fly variations to the tracks and add a play-song skill to Entertainer and Musician. Now we have the ability to have new practicing musicians to make mistakes (the same way new dancers can fall over) by playing the wrong note, playing slightly out of time, or maybe just for comedic factor making the wrong instrument sound come out of what you're playing.
The uploads would have to be midi's (not mp3, wav, oggs, etc)- that way playback is gaurenteed and instrument map is standard and defined for everyone. Also midi's are tiny. Only issue is (C) and suitability which is a good point - it would need to be original or PD and MUST fit into SWG - maybe an approval process would be needed
If it was something that would be considered I would like to work up some ideas a little - only in player cantinas, aproval of songs must be 3 band memebers and cantina owner/town mayor - if they all want something that sounds like Slim Shady (but is not becaus of copyright) then let em
Anyway WE MUST GET MORE SONGS INTO SWG asap
Are you saying that the "Alpha Horns" currently sound all alike, or at least very similar, and the same is true of all the "Beta Horns"? The Traz and Chidinkalu Horns definitely have distinctive sounds from the other horns, and from each other. I seem to be able to tell the difference when playing some of the Musician songs like Jazz and Virtuoso.
Of course, that would still only mean we have seven distinct sounding instruments. We definitely do need more! ![]()
