Thread: Chilastra Server Musicians: Would You Be Interested In This...?
The city of Xyon (Chilastra, Naboo)is considering sponsoring a Player Event targeted towards Musicians and especially established Bands. We call it "Xyon's Battle Of The Bands Concert". This will be a contest for the "best" band or single Musician, the outcome determined by audience response. As Marketing Director, I thought that I would "test the waters" first and get some feedback from the Musician Community about how best to approuch this idea.
The Grand Prize is still under consideration. We are thinking of maybe offering a cash prize of 150k credits. Is that good enough to attract a lot of Musicians to such an event?
Our city's Financial Advisor wasn't too happy with this and he suggested an entrance fee to offset the cost. Hementioned 5k.Would musicians be willing to pay this for the chance at the Grand Prize?
We are also considering a Second Prize for the runnerup. One suggestion was a free musical instrument to each band member or single Musician who placed second. Another was a smaller cash prize of 25k credits. Which prize would a Musician find more attractive?
The timing of the event is also an issue. US Primetime (between 7pm and 9pm CST) and a weekend datewas suggested. Do you think that this would be a good timeto insuremaximum participation?
Finally, how many would actually show up for such an event? Our city alone would expect to have about 20 audience members attend. How many bands do you think would show up?
Thanks for your input. All suggestions are welcome.
my suggestion is, just put a big ol' post up on the events board, and start talking with other musicians you run across in game. while many check the boards, more don't. i'd have some of your xc members run out to as many cantinas as they can and just start talking it up with the musicians you find there.
as for the prizes, the money is probably a bigger motivator as most musicians can make their own instruments. plus you'll probably get a lot of masters, who will already have all the instruments there are. if you are thinking of a trophy type prize rather than monetary, i would suggest clothes (most performers are always on the lookout for new cotumes), or else some random rare artifact you find (because that's always cool).
i don't think an entry fee would be too harsh. just keep it reasonable.
don't want this to get too long, considering most of it is just my opinion anyway
fabulous idea! run with it! be decisive in your decisions and just go to it! they will come if you advertise!

Thanks Nichu, I value your opinion.
Clothing, eh? Good idea. Hadn't thought of that. We have some really good Master Tailors in our city, so this would work.
We were thinking of making the entrance fee 100cr. Too much?
We'll take your advice and send out some XC members to start spreading the idea around.
Thanks again.
Well speakingas a player, I love the idea, A good social event, get the musicians together, see some original bandflourish "songs". Also I enjoy the music in game as a profession, so its right up my alley.
Speaking as the booking agent for Frag's Puppies, I'll say that schedule is gonna be a real problem. I don't know about any other bands, but the Pups get booked, and often. Schedules and ISP's being what they are,it no longer is a "band", but a list of Masters who share the gigs as we are available. If I coulld get all of us together for a single gig, I think I'd have 8 or 9 Master musicians and 4 or 5 Master Dancers, but I can NEVER get everyone. We would love the exposure, but its difficult filling all the gigs we have now.
Lastly entrance fees and prizes...I think both are necessary, but if you set the entrance fee too high then noone will enter, and the same is true if you set the prize too low. Solo I do 3-4 buffs an hour...and that's not even pushing them...if I were to advertise I could book up solid.A prize of a unique item would be better than cash as most people entering would be masters, and I don't think that masters have had many cash issues if they do buffs. Also, not to burst a bubble, but a booking of Frag's Puppies costs more than you're looking at as your prize. We do mostly weddings where the sky IS the limit, but for the time involved and that a "band" is 3-5 Master Musicians, we get paid well to make the commitment, to play the gig, and to do a good job. So specifically I'd say the 5K entrance fee is too low to support the size of prize you would need, but going over a 20K entrance for an individual would be painful.
Maybe you should have 2 different contests...Band and solo. Band has a higher prize but also a higher entrance fee. Its easier to get a small amount from many members of a band than a pile from an individual.

Great idea!
I'm in as well. So is Jakob Ness, also of the BVC. We'll be a team of 2, can we do that?

...you may want to post this in the Chilastra Boards as well? eh'?
