Thread: (Non-player) theaters: what would it take?

Chatting with a friend of mine, I was once again reminded that theaters are much much nicer than cantinas. Stages chairs . . . blah blah blah. I really wish all the musicians and dancers who play in, say, Coronet cantina (on any server) would instead operate out of the theater.

I have no idea how to effect such a change, though. Seems to me it'd takea massive concerted effort--all the non-AFK performers would have to be coaxed into moving to the theater, and this coaxing would have to continual, for several days at least. That is: you'd need to convince all the performers to get on over to the theater, then have somebody stay in the cantina to redirect new customers and performers; you'd have to keep doing that more or less indifinitely, which would mean you'd need people working in shifts to move the crowds.

Has anybody been able to achieve anything like this? Seems pretty damn daunting.

we did it when we had our first house/ cantina outside of bestine. People moved there pretty redily. We also tried it for hotels, that was as good of a shift. If you have the crew and make the effort, it can be done

Interesting post.. actually I agree with you as I prefer theaters over cantinas..

When I started the game back in June I always played out of a hotel with others.. However, it's not the structure that makes people flock to cantinas, but the name..Todays players are basically children and young adults that view cantinas (BARS) as cool spots to gather.. I would even go sar far as to say that IF SWG changed the title names of the structrues to make current theaters into cantinas, people would go there, not because it's a better building to preform in, but because it has the cantina name..

This areas has always troubled me.. Why have theaters, cantinas, and hotels (especially in the same cities) when only one is ever going to be utilized.. On "rare" occasions a group might actually perform, but never n a regular basis.. This game has turned into unorganized mass afk-taining where people stand around and play wherever and whenever.. A short trip to Theed's cantina will demostrate this..

I've been in bands that rehearsed in public theaters, but I've never had the good fortune really to perform in one. After launch, my friends and I talked about putting on a ballet (!) in a theater, with Musicians in the pit and Dancers on stage. We never got our act together, so to speak.

You're right, it's too bad public theaters are under-utilized.I'd be interested in hearing ideas on how to encourage diversification of venue. OTOH, the "critical mass" in many public cantinas is already missing, and diluting it further might not be great.

I do wish the private, player-owned theaters looked like the public theaters. The public theater is one of my favorite buildings in the game. The private theater is one of my least favorite.

Finally, on AFK'ing: you're right, Liza, there's an AFK plague in large public cantinas. But private cantinas, and small public ones (e.g., on Endor or Dantooine),can be a different story; there the mix of Live and AFK is more unpredictable. Even in the worst AFK hives (Theed and Coronet), a few people are still "Live," but only a few.

Keep in mind the non-player theaters are actually called "Guild Hall: Theater". Many many players don't know they can go there... and many more don't know they can rest in a hotel as well. (I like hotel stages for small groups. Great atmosphere.)

I don't think the change can be effected until after the quest-driven FSCS methodology is in place. Until then, there will still be people trying to zip through Entertainer/Musician/Dancer in the hopes it's The One.

Maybe after the change, I'll park my husband's avatar in the Cantina and advertise that my Master Musician/Dancer is in the Theater available for buffs (and give the waypoint).

The drawback to the NPC Theater is that the back rows of seating are out of range of someone performing onstage for healing purposes. I think. It's hard to test without some help.

Good post - I'm sure this issue has been brought up since the beginning of the game. It's my experience that the reason the Cantina (I'm talking just about Coronet's) get's so much more 'business' is LOCATION. Everyone knows where it is, they've been going there to heal BF and mind wounds since the start, and it's CLOSE to the cetral hub of the city.

Walking around, trying to find trainers or just a quiet place to craft, it sad to see all the gorgeous architecture that the devs placed in these cities (Doaba Guerful, for another example) and then see it not get used. There are four big hotspots on Corellia - The Coronet Startport, Bank, Cantina, and Med Center.

We, as players, should give suggestions as to what it would take for more cities on more planets to become populated.

One time a gal was so lagged in the cantina she couldn't even listen, so I stopped her at the starport before she could take off, and we... went to the hotel together.

Can you heal mind wounds and BF in a theater or hotel?

Yes. At least, last time I tried you could.
