Thread: Stacking Buffs

I almost didn't post this, because I'm thinking it's probably an exploit. But I decided the devs probably don't care, and since none of this is documented anyway, whose to say it is an exploit or intended? Did you know a person doesn't have to type /stoplisten right away? They can wait until they shuttle wherever it is they're going. Is this intended, or is it exploiting? Well, take it a step further.

Okay so a person can get buffed as normal, and after they type /stoplisten, go and /listen again. I'm not sure if you have to /setperform them again or not, probably easier just to group with them. Buffed, they listen for however long it takes you to do it, but they don't type /stoplisten the second time, they leave. After the first buff runs out, two hours later, now they type /stoplisten. This will activate the second buff. So, in effect, you can buff people for 4 hours.

I don't refer to this as a "stack" as that implies that the buffs add to each other. I would call this a "bank", the buff is "banked" for later use.

It is possible to do this and it has been discussed here before. Procedure is to buff the person normally then have them listen again. After they wait and listen the amount of time again, they walk away and DO NOT /stoplisten. Anytime after the first buff expires the recipient can /stoplisten to activate the "banked" buff.

I have customers who specifically request this. As to whether that is an exploit or not is a semantic question and for the Devs to decide....if they care.

Ya it seems so obvious I wondered why I hadn't seen it discussed. Guess I missed it.

The devs have asked me periodically about this type of buff behavior, though not this particular behavior, so I'm pretty sure they do care. Personally, I'd never heard of this buff-stacking procedure until I read this post. I suspect it's not intended behavior, but I'm not as sure about this as I am about the insta-buff.

I'm pretty much duty-bound to report this to the devs; that's part of my job as Correspondent, or at least the devs have always said it is.

O ya go ahead and do report it, I reported this it as a bug; I consider it an exploit. I think 30 second buffs are exploits as well, due to tricking the server into ignoringyour flourish count, spamming stopping and starting commands.Course, I also consider the not being able to buff oneself bug a bug. Now if I could only a figure out a way to trick the server into thinking I'm not playing while I'm playingto get off a 30 second buff.

Three minutes andhowever long it takes to type"it's been three minutes" to buff somebody, to me, seems fair. It's like the time of an average song, really. I especially like that I have enough in me, inherently, to do it without a heal or buff. I can just watch my action bar and know when it's been exactly three minutes. Now everybody go rereoll yourselves a Rodian.

Anyway, NewJedi, ask them, "is four hour music buffs given in one minute OK?" I know it's too late to submit a question to the devs because they didn't answerour other ones, anyway. So tell them they don't have to answer this one.

'Storing' a buff, as I refer to it, is applied exactly the same way as doing the first one, either via /setperform or a passive group buff. It almost makes up for the fact that performer buff strength isn't based totally on the performer's skill (like doctor buffs), nor can they potentially last as long as doctor buffs, and that the bloody timer is borked and doesn't reset upon death of the recipient, making it impossible to re-apply...as can be done with doctor buffs. Almost. Not quite. If whatever developer(s) designed the system would just come around here and tell us how they intended for the darn things to work, then we wouldn't have to speculate so much as to whether what we're doing for our patrons is intended or not. Report away, NewJedi. I gave up hope that the developers actually give a rodent's derriere about the performing professions a long time ago. If it doesn't directly effect combat, it's not worth their effort to care about. At least, that's the way it appears to me.

Incidentally, in order to ensure that this works, the performer needs to make sure they're not performing in whichever mode the patron is 'storing' a buff for; if they're saving up a music mind enhancement, the musician needs to not be playing music at all when the patron moves out of listening range. Doing so usually triggers the buff and if the recipient is already buffed, wastes the stored one. Same with dance mind enhancement.

Instead of asking to have it nerfed or declared exploit officially, ask for it to be considered ok Makes our jobs much easier, no? It doesnt hurt anyone and the only advantage is that the buff doesnt take as long to do, which is benefitial for the musician and the listener as both save time and the musician can potentially buff more people in the same amount of time it would take him to buff one person the slow way. If you ask for artificial timesinks to be enforced, then its no wonder SWG has so many of them.. with people complaining when things are done too quickly

Hey, I'm cool with it, maybe they should just document it. I don't know what's up what's down these days, cats.

I can just hear myself now, though, purple flashing jumpsuit, hell maybe I'll take out my hotpants, all fat, hollaring in some Pirate Outpost Tavern: spamming,"F O U R hour MUSIC BUFFZ given in O N E M I N U T E Z! ! ! ! ! ! ! " Those other musicians shall hate my guts, I'm telling ya.
