Thread: Regarding /deny and a brainstorm I had:

Was just reading through the musician board for the first time, lots of interesting stuff here.

Was interested to hear about the /deny command. I understand a lot of the fears that some people have expressed about it's abuse. However, remember that unless you're factioned or accept duels there is no PVP. There is no way that anyone can do anything to your character (they may annoy you personally but that's not doing anything to you character). Therefore, if there's a bunch of entertainers doing the "Your money or /deny!" trick, there is nothing that will stop me from saying "Hey! I'm here to have fun. I'm not /denying you, please listen to me! And if you feel like you want to tip, go ahead. If you feel like you don't want to tip, that's okay!" Everyone will listen to me, many will tip, simply because I'm not being a butthead. This could be a problem for a short period of time but I think it is a self-correcting one.

I was reading another message and someone mentioned in passing how recording music would be cool. This gave me a brainstorm. How do musicians make money in the real world? Selling albums. Have musicians able to go to the music hall/auditoriums (would give us a reason to play there) in order to record a few minutes of music, either by themselves or as a band. They pay some creds as a 'recording fee' which would be slideable based on band size, song(s) played and number of flourishes done in order to get a template. They can then crank out copies of this template (or have an artisan do it) and sell them. The recordings should not give mind buffs (have to see an musican perform live for those) but would heal BF and mind wounds, albeit a lot slower than a live performance would. The recording would have to be listened to in a camp, cantina or hospital in order to have effect. Each recording could be listened to a limited number of times (like a drink with multiple usages) before you'd get all the benefit out of it - higher level musicians could make recordings with more uses than lower levels (works of the masters are more timeless than your average garage band).

This would give us:

1) a reason to play in the concert halls.

2) a way to make money.

3) a way of getting recognition outside of the cantina ("Dude! Your latest recording helped me get through three fights today!")

And maybe a couple of other things I haven't thought of yet.

Welcome to the forum, and thanks for an interesting post. I like your idea, but I worry that it might undermine "live" performance by reducing or eliminating the fighter's need to visit the cantina or hotel.

Maybe an alternative could be that your recordings could provide mind buffs. Highly-skilled Musicians and Dancers already do buff Mind stats, but those buffs only last half an hour. Perhaps your recording could allow someone to apply the buff in the field, so that it doesn't wear out during the run from cantina to hunting spot. What do you think?

Thanks for the feedback.

I was thiking that the mind buffs could be only from live performances, thus giving people a reason to watch us play. I do get your point about mind buffs in the field though - I didn't realize that those buffs only lasted half an hour which means travel time can eat up the value of the buff.

On the other hand, at some point personalvehicles will get introduced which will allow those combat people to move much faster to their hunting/combat zones. So I personally think that it's okay that mind buffs only come from live performances.

Another reason to watch a live performance is that while listening to a recording will reduce your BF and mind wounds, it does so at a much, much slower rate.
