Hi Carina,

While I can understand your desire to want to do something in your Cantina, there are going to be a few obsticals to hurdle. The first is the band as it seems you are looking for a house band, someone who can commit on a regular basis.Most of the established bands have regular gigs along with additional bookings for events. I know speaking for myself, I have two regular commitments each week along with irregular bookings. Myself, I would not want an additional regular booking. You could start a houseband but once again, you need people who can make the commitment to be there on a regular basis.

The alternative is to book different acts each week. What is nice about this approach is that your patrons have a varied venue from week to week. Most established bands have no problem booking a date.

But this brings us to the next problem. Every day of the week you are going to be competing with another club someplace in the galaxy. Some of these clubs have been estalished for some time and have a regular following. Some have weaker followings. There are too many City Cantinas and not enough patrons or days in the week to accommodate them all.

Unless the Cantina has an inspired and dedicated manager who will go the extra mile to bring in patrons and entertainment, it will fail. Most entertainers are too busy entertaining and creating material to also do promotions. They really look to the club owners to do the promotions and if the crowd isn't there, interest wanes fast. No entertainer will play to an empty Cantina and empty Cantinas can't really afford to bring in entertainment. A good first step might be to actually try to gauge the size of your patronage.Startwith your city residents. Will they be there on a regular basis or is perhaps a monthly event more suitable for them.

I don't mean to try and discourage you or anything but to let you know some of the things that need to be thought out perhaps even prior to hiring a band. Many of our entertainers have talked about opening cantinas and to be honest I usually try to talk them out of it. Its much easier to be a entertainer in demand then a cantina owner competing for them.

Personally I would suggest you plan a single big event. Something fun and hire a good band. Kick around ideas, theres lots of them out there. Concentrate on the one big event, promote it on the boards, and see how it works out. If its a big success you plan another. Some of the biggest events in the galaxy have been done in this way.
