Thread: Proposal Craftable Jukeboxes

Greetings!

I'm not an entertainer myself, but after seeing the feedback from entertainers to the release of the Jukebox, I can see where it would cut into a profession already marginalized by game mechanics. So, I would like to propose a method to take the cash sink represented by the Jukebox, and redirect it into the musician profession as a means of equitably redistributing wealth and adding value to the musician profession.

1. Demand
Firstly, we know there is great demand for the Jukebox to be a permanent item. From the moment it was listed as a coming feature, the request has been made to make it permanent. But, making it permanent, or even requiring an upkeep to make it semi-permanent, would only serve to further harm the musician profession.

2. Proposal
Add the ability to craft jukeboxes to the list of things a Musician could do.

- Add a 'recording device' as a crafting tool that can be used by the recording profession.

- Each crafted jukebox would be limited in the number of songs it could play. At the entertainer level, the jukebox might be limited to just one song each. At the higher levels by genre. Say 'love songs' or 'Imperial themes'. This would allow the musician's crafted items to get better at higher levels.

- A crafted jukebox would have a timer, like all lamps presently, between just a few days to a month. When this time limit is up, it dissapears as Jukeboxes do now. This ensures a continual revenue stream for musicians.

- The resources needed to make a Jukebox should generally be common, with the goal of making player made Jukeboxes cheaper than those offered as event perks, with much longer timers. This creates demand, without removing the option of using the NPC vendor.

3. Possible Issues
There's still a few sticking points.

- This gives musicians a new source of revenue, without giving anything to dancers. While a simular system of sellable dancer hologram items would be great, it is beyond the scope of this proposal.

- Craftable jukeboxes do not alter the fact that the jukebox will create music perceived by many to be superior to player generated music. It simply sends the cash for these items back into the pockets of musicians.

- Having so many music sources playing in so many buildings could cause some onforeseen lag or performance issue which, as a player, I am not privy to.

As musicians, would this be an equitable new option for musicians? Or is there a dimension to this plan that is worse than the current situation? Opinions welcome, attention of the Musician correspondent appreciated, attention of the Devs too much to hope for

Honestly, while we understand the allure of the jukebox, I don't see how crafting the jukebox makes sense. The issue is what you hit on the head - we have had one new song introduced in two years as the extent of our new entertainment skill; we're now supposed to be able to craft a item that has dozens or more songs we can't come close to playing?

The main issue is that we're a set of professions that get no love from development as a whole. I don't think any of us want to be jealous of the jukebox - and for me at least it really is jealousy - but considering the constant influx of content pilots combatants and artisans get it's hard not to get jealous. The box can do everything I want to do.

Otherwise, we already have a synth chip for droids the allows us to record tracks. the basics for the crafting are already there. i just don't want to end up feeling like an artisan. Spending all day making chips to make jukeboxes sounsd too much like grinding to me!

Hmm but then again, if we have to have tracks made to make jukeboxes, and we all agree not to make jukeboxes, we sort of solve the problem by fiat. Maybe we should get this right!

Just kidding!

The problem with the jukebox is it can be used to replace us in the venues we frequent, I.E. cantinas. I see most requests for the permanent jukebox as some kind of shop ambiance. I would prefer to see the device something that could be added to a vendor instead of a stand alone unit. That way shop owners can have their ambient music without bringing it into the places where it would compete directly with musicians.
