Thread: Recording Flourishes on Droids With Playback Modules

Okay, so I picked up a droid with a playback module (plus various effects) and now it seems whenever I record anything to the droid and play it back, all I get is the basic melody with no flourishes. I play an assortment of flourishes and I'm pretty sure it was working (although it was late and I had the volume down low, so I could be wrong!)

Any ideas why or what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

When you record to the playback droid, even if you flo it's only recording the base song there. It's not really a straight recording device, it really just stores one song played on one instrument per track.

However... hope is not lost. Your droid playback will respond and flo with /bandflos and with /bandflo (#) (instrument), where (instrument) is the one you recorded to the droid. Just takes a bit of planning.

As far as I know, you can't record flourishes. I've got two droids filled with playback modules, and the droids don't "record" the flourishes -- only the instrument/song that is being played. I can understand why: can you imagine the possible storage issues the devs would encounter storing all those flourishes? It's probably also a programming issue. It's much easier to store the instrument/song combo than the exact flourishes.

There's also a playstyle issue: you don't necessarily want to hear the same 6 flourishes over and over and over again. What I do is have a separate macro for band flourishes that the droid will pick up on. It's not the best solution, but it does get the droid to play a few different things.

Yep, you're doing nothing wrong.

The droid reacts to a /bandflo so that it plays along with you. As was said above, you can also specify that just the droid flourish by using "/bandflo 1 slitherhorn" or whatever instrument you programmed the droid to record. This will make your droid flourish, and only your droid. Combined with a /pausemusic (to pause your music for one measure) this will let your droid take a solo! haha.

They did this with these droids so that the droid would be an active member of the band, rather than passive. I did the same thing when I first tried my droid out, thought I did something wrong. Turns out it's better the way they did it, since it would get dull to have that droid looping the same few flourishes in the 20 seconds you recorded on it - instead it's another member of the band now.

Have fun!

Thanks for the feedback - it's much appreciated!

I'll create/modify a macro to include some bandflourishes to get Peepoo (my droid ) to join in with some flourishes... And the solo idea is great! I think I'll record some Bandfill tracks and get him to do a 20-minute RAWK drum solo...

Again, thanks!

If you're interested in being more improvisational with your droid's flourishes, I suggest the following aliases to make it easier to get the droid flo'ing.

/alias nal1 /bandflourish 1 nalargon
/alias nal2 /bandflourish 2 nalargon
...
/alias fill1 /bandflourish 1 bandfill
...
/alias chid1 /bandflourish 1 chidinkalu
...
/alias fan1 /bandflourish 1 fanfar
...
/alias mand1 /bandflourish 1 mandoviol

Of course, suit to your tastes. If you do this, then you can hit ctrl-up twice (the first time will show the command that the alias translated to) and you'll have the number at the end of the line, so with a simple backspace followed by a new number, you can get a new flourish from your droid nice and quickly before the next segment of music starts .

One thing that may help with doing those pesky bandflos......

You can abbreviate both "bandflourish" the instrument name so that bandflos are easier to type. Now don't mention this near any Devs (and Dev Pro Temps do not count), but the abbreviations are perhaps the best, shortest ones in game.

Try it yourself sometime.....

Instead of doing "/bandflourish 1 chidinkalu" try "/b 1 c"

This will work for every instrument EXCEPT Fanfar and Fizzz. For those you need to do "/b 1 fi" or "/b 1 fa" or just useSlytherhorn or Traz and Kloo Horn or Chidinkalu instead.

Enjoy.

Man my alias file is starting to get long... One of these days I'm going to have to write a database just to keep track of what is in it...

Thanks for the comments, guys. I had Peepoo playing the Mandoviol whilst I got down on my bottle jug... I mean Bandfill.

The results were pretty impressive, even if I do say so myself!

Now I have the basics down, I think I need to re-edit my macro, though, as Peepoo's guitar solo every 30 seconds got a little annoying... What can I say? He's a spotlight junkie...
