This isa very popular topic, and a polarizing one But I'm going to answer you because I know this community is a mature one. This is the typical setup for macroing. Step one is to write a macro.

Macro

  1. /startmusic <name>;

  2. /pause #;

  3. /flourish <1-8>;/flourish <1-8>;

  4. /pause #;

  5. /ui action toolbarSlot##;

Description

Follow each line with a semi-colon. I don't know if it's a strict requirement, but I read somewhere that it's good to include at the end of each line. You can also separate each command by semi-colons, which I did on line 3. Once done, assign it an icon and move the icon to an open toolbar slot.

/startmusic. This command, when used along, will open the dialog box from which you choose a song. It can also be typed to include the song (<name>. So, /startmusic Folk would start you playing the Folk song, if you can play it.

/pause #. These are in seconds. I recommend liberal use of them. It takes the game some amount of time to "catch up" wtih a requested action, dependent on lag. More importantly, it sets up how long to wait between actions, for each action takes a certain amount of time to happen anyway.

/flourish <1-8>;/flourish <1-8;. It is generally recommended that you do two flourishes sequentially for the maximum per-flourish Musicianship XP potential/

/pause #. The second /pause above is the critical one. You use your Action Pool each time you flourish. Ideally, the /pause would be the amount of time it takes you to regenerate your Action Pool back to full after two flourishes.

/ui action toolbarSlot##. Easily the most controversial command in the game. Back in beta they removed the /loop command. This is effectively its sister. Basically, it activates a toolbar slot. Interestingly, while toolbar slot 1 is activated by Fkey 1, the actual "toolbarSlot" numbers start at 0. You need to include a leading zero. So, slot #1 in the command is actually "01". It's also very critical you type it verbatim. The S in Slot is capital. If you put the icon in slot 1, use the command /ui action toolbarSlot01.

Notes

This is a very contentious point among musicians and dancers, as right it should be. On the one hand, it can get boring hitting flourishes. On the other, the people that love the profession love hitting flourishes. The system, given the confines of the world its in, is simply amazing, and you can really create moods and unique songs by "composing" within the bounds of the flourishes per instrument per song.

It takes a long time of flourish pounding to get to even Novice Musician. But it's well worth it. It's also extremely worth it to do it in a band. All bands I've been in and lead scale down without a second thought to the abilities of the least trained player. The community of entertainers that enjoy the profession are a great bunch of people.

Personally, many people use AFK macroers to help chip away at what they feel is the overly laborious amount of time it takes to get to a good array of instrument and song options. But everyone's different. Finding your own path and preferences is 90% of what it's all about

Or you could just be a Rodian..

Well I'm guilty of the AFK macro, but I tend to play in the back of the cantina and I also have it set up so that while I'm in MacroBot mode I have a few says come out that say stuff like this...

"Welcome to the Cantina, I am a hologram that has been provided by the owner. So please save your credits and /tip the live performers. They are working hard to help you!" I have a few other things to that sort of effect that I say, but I think you get the idea.

My simple view of Macro grinding is this. People hate the low level songs and using a Macro is a way to help move past the low level songs. Plus if I'm playing in the cantina that has no live performers, then I noticed I will still get tips from people just because I'm there healing them, when no one else was. Basically I think it is just really bad form to set up a macro and then try and ask for tips or take away from people who are not AFK.

I have found however that having this macro set up is great even when I'm not AFK because I can start it up and not have to worry about hitting the flourishes every few XP ticks. I just start it up and then I can RP the nite away with out messing with my song playing.

I get extremely annoyed by the AFK macroers who insist on doing it in the cantina if they have spacial chat macroed in there too, especially as group leader when I'm looking for who's asking for invites.

That said, it's pretty cool that you have a macro that basically says "I'm AFK, don't make the mistake of tipping me." But the annoyance isn't that you're AFK, or even that you might get some tips....it's that you're in the cantina... Why? You still get musician XP anywhere else, and no one is going to listen to you for the Healing XP if you're saying "I'm a hologram." It's better than some of the chat spam I've seen from AFKers, but c'mon spam is annoying either way. Don't mean to pick on anyone, and I'm not being judgemental about the macroing, just requesting that you keep all spacial chat out of your macros and you stay out of the cantina if you're going to be AFK for very long.

Contentious is right: macroing always seems like cheating to some, like just another strategy to others.

Me? I have a 5 minute script. That is timed to meet my stamina. When I'm done the script, I sit down and rest. At full action, I stand again, startmusic, and start my macro. I am always at keyboard (or out to quickly grab a drink/book/check my mp3 player/etc. I never go untended for more than a few minutes: this I do out of consideration for anyone trying to get a hold of me, or in the scenario that I become a groupleader.

Is this cheating? Well: they added macros to the game to allow complex commands to be entered in sequence at a keystroke, rather than doing it manuelly. I think my work fits that to the letter: but interpretation is a part of all semantic debate.

Hehe I'm too vain I could never play a race I didn't enjoy looking at, even though I play in first person mostly. I play a Zabrak, to prove that we're not all agents of death and destruction.

Beyond the cheating debate (I have an opinion on that but not the desire to share it), running your macro loop for a week straight will kill all your attempts to do secure trade and emails, or write new macros. These are the problems I have on my 3 min. long "song" I hit repeatedly. I just add the line at the end /tell kora macro's done. Not an original suggestion, I stole it from someone but then I know when I can write my 40 emails a day that I end up sending out, or trade with a tailor tipping clothing, or write out a new macro song I got from someone.

I have several macros all for different purposes.

For general cantina mayhem I have what I call my xp macro - not fancy at all but long - lets me chat the night away and perform leader activities. Trading doesn't work with it and email is a complete pain with it - so i don't have it run continually just half my green bar - then i can stop and trade/email or press it again and wait until completely drained.

I have other macros that i use for performances which i do at the hotel for other musicians (we have started experimenting and sharing macros - also using a variety of instruments and songs - macros let us keep the particularly good combos stored someplace)

I have another set of macros that i use in shuttleports, space ports, and med centers - these are shorter, use advanced songs/instruments and are more like mini performances.

One comment on spatial spam - keep it very short, make it varied, run it once an hour or less. And please DO NOT sing songs without asking first and when you do sing them make sure you put some pauses in - the long ones fly by too fast to read. For us poor ppl who get 50 tells an hour you can seriously screw us up. And if you're spamming for tips you're and idiot - sorry but you are.
