title says it all - what is a buffbot? and please don't reply with an opinion of them as i know what everyone says but i'd like to know what they actually are.....

A buffbot is a toon that is left online 24/7 (afk) and runs a macro that allows it to give buffs (on these boards, typically musician and dancer buffs) to any player that follows its intructions (usually these involve inviting the buffbot to your group).

A buffbot is a Musician or Dancer who performs more or less continuously, usually while the bot's owner is away from the keyboard (AFK). The buffbot runs a looping macro that asks others to invite the bot into their group, then performs the flourishes necessary to buff group members. Some people use these bots to service their guilds. Some use them just to make money off tips. (Buffbots often include /say spam as part of their headache-inducing routine.) A few use them to grief live entertainers.
The devs have committed themselves to eliminating buffbots. Unfortunately, this change is apparently going to take a while.
You'll find that most Musicians here in this forum are opposed to bots because they undermine the social (not to mention economic) underpinnings of the entertaining professions. Few other MMORPGs allow botting on this scale. For the life of me, I don't understand why SWG ever did in the first place.

Scipionus summarized it well. The reason it's called a bot is because it is a robot. The toon is totally script driven with no onen actually playing the character. The player is off somewhere else on another toon or doing RL things.

Hehe, I started reading this thread, and I was sure I'd posted in it already. Sure enough, I have -- in a duplicate thread. But Scip summed up what I was trying to say anyway.

Buffbots are a form of in-game virus. If you invite the buffbot to your group you will become infected with the virus.
Buffbots cause lag.
Buffbots cause warping.
Buffbots will make your harvesters disappear, then reappear.
Buffbots make the waypoints to your harvesters stay disappeared.
Buffbot weaponsmiths are the ones making all the DOT weapons.
Buffbot combat medics are the ones making all the poisons.
Buffbots broke Kessel.
Buffbots enforce the 6k cap on the bazaar.
Every time you pay 20cr to list something on the bazaar, it gets bank tipped to a buffbot.
Buffbots get the 5% commission on bank tips. That's how they afford those musician and dance buff skill tapes.
If you are a Jedi, buffbots cause XP loss.
Buffbots can make you crash to desktop.
A buffbot killed PvP.
but most of all...
Buffbots steal the starwarsiness of the game and store it in 100k stacks in their inventories.
