Thread: What should I do with this game?

Okay, I've been around since the game shipped. I've always been an entertainer of some kind, but ever since the beginning I've waited for the entertainer professions to become more than just an afterthought. I've taken two long absences (both around 6 months)in the hope that things would improve while I took a break, but still, after nearly 18 months our professions are still basically where they were 18 months ago - broken and with no fix in sight.

I haven't put a huge amount of time into this game - probably 6 months all told, but I do have a character I like who has a home and who is just about scraping by on her experience. She's a pacifist though, so my ability to do things in the game are heavily restricted because the developers don't seem to seeany point in putting non-combat content (or alternative non-combat ways to get to the content that's alreadyin the game)into the game. I've taken her about as far as I can, given the restrictions I've imposed on her, and those the developers have imposed on non-combat characters.

I'm getting tired of waiting, and I'm paying $15 per month just to have this game sitting unplayed on my computer. I'm not going to cancel my account for another 3 months, just to find when I returnthat yet againnothing has changed. So the question is this:

Should I keep paying and keep hoping against hope that something good will happen? Is there any reason to think that something is in the works to make entertaining fun?

or..

Is all hope gone now, and should I just cut my losses andcall it quits for good?

Since June 2004, running one of the game's first completely nonviolent characters. Testing the limits of non-combat MMORPG play and trying to have fun into the bargain (although the developers make it difficult).

Combat is no longer compulsory.

it is sad to say but you should at the very least cancel your account for awhile.

A little while back the former dancer correspondant got a reply from a dev or TH, that things probably wont improve for us for about 6+ months, and that if you arent currently happy with the way things are going and dont want to try something else you should 'take a break'.

I have currently been thinking about leaving too, if it wasnt for the friends i have made that still play i would be long gone.

Well, I am being forced to take a 4 month break due to RL events... but in the meantime, here are some things you might want to try. (And if you've already done them... GREAT! if not, try them out to see if you like it!)

I tailored the list to some non-combat stuff. I'm right there with ya in that department, I play a master musician/master dancer/master entertainer on Tarquinas and the few SPs I have left give me enough combat to be able to fend off a few chubas or meatlumps.

Plan and execute a player event (party, cantina crawl, swoop race, storytelling contest, stand-up comedy contest, etc.)

(I really wanted to organize a swoop race on my server using one of the new swoop tracks, but I ran out of time.)

Race a swoop track! (Yay, non-combat badges!)

Organize your very own band/dance troupe of live entertainers to play at parties, weddings, and public concerts. (Believe me, it's a lot harder than you think.)

Find every playable outdoor Nalargon in the galaxy and tickle the ivories on it!

Go on a one-woman/one-droid galactic concert tour! Have a tailor friend make concert Tees, jewelry, accessories, you name it!

RP!

Make a new character on a different server... being a newbie all over again can be very refreshing.

ok, that's all I can think of for now... if I think of anything else, I'll edit.

The devs do have plans for us, but they probably won't be implemented until after the Combat Upgrade, which is probably going to take a while. So as usual, all I can say is that it will take time. Believe me, I'm tired of waiting too. I do think eventually they intend to address most if not all items on our top-five list -- AFK'ing, new songs, better content, etc. But things seem to change very slowly in SWG, even by the standards of MMORPGs.

I made lots of dancer/musicianfriends throughout my career, but (not surprisingly)they all seem to leave. It gets depressing.

As for planning concerts, I have a half-hour duetshow that I go on tour with occasionally (me and my robot), and it is well-liked, but it's just not the same as having the cameraderie of just playing musicwith others on an unscheduled basis. I find touring is much more work than just showing up at a cantina and jamming. It's fun in a way, but I findit too confining to do more than once a week.

starsider, huh? Well, if you're still around and want to jam, feel free to /addfriend abici and send tells if I'm online to jam. It's always more fun to mess around with music in game with a small group than it is to shoot poor creatures around the galaxy.

Here's the problem I have with this game in a nutshell - people don't care about each other in this game. Look at my first post - two out of three people who felt strongly enough to award stars awarded me 1 star (or at best allthree people awarded2 stars each - but I know two people awarded me 1 star because I saw them as theyappeared). This shows how antagonistic the community is towards criticism: 66% on THIS forum (i.e. my fellow musicians)don't just 'not care' about their fellow players - they activelyhate their fellow players. The SWGcommunityas a wholeis not open to criticism, it is not supportive of community members who are discouraged. This is a major reasonwhy SWG is dying. If it was ONLY that the developers didn't care about us non-combat folks, that would be one thing, but the community as a whole clearlydoesn't care.

Thats not true Beery, Ive found that people do generally care about their fellows. If they didnt no PA would exist. In fact thats the only reason I help run our PA , namely to enhance our members in game experiance.

You have chosen a play style that while it is completely acceptable, is none-the-less far from the norm. So you will of course feel that content, players interests, etc are not in synch with your own.

Most players care about the professions they play, the professions that their friends play, and the professions that they want to play or alternatively those professions that they feel are damaging to the game.

Youve been around a while and can take comfort that you are not the only member of a profession in need of tweaking.

Your in luck though, they have stated that after CU the first thing on the plate is the Non-Combat profession revamps. This is logical as combat is the majority occupation of the player base. During the first 18 months of play not many professions had received much revampin. Chef and Bounty Hunter, Image Designer being the biggest exceptions for good or ill as the case may be.

So in other words your not alone. Changes are coming, but its a case of either being patient or simply canceling until said changes are made.

People do care and most people are pretty decent.

Oh yeah, I wouldnt put too much weight on forum traffic in any case, not too many players actually post or read here. Is mostly just us forum fanatics here.
