Please, just don't ask me why, lol.

Anyway, I came across this thread.

I'm saddened at the number of votes there were in category 2 for She Who Must Not Be Named.

/sigh

Now I'm starting to see the kinds of people who support the buffbot madness...

Haha! Yeah..they're having one of these on the Chilastra forum too. I'm one of the nominees for dancer but I'm lagging behind a popular troller who gave it up and the bot from MO.

I did see on the Bria one that Gypsy Court got a nomination for neutral guild of the year.

As silly and senseless as this sort of poll is, they are kind of fun..as long as everyone remembers that it is not a true indicator of player appreciation but the limited opinion of the 20 or so players who regularly troll that forum.

For Bria that's probably true. I don't know about Chilastra.

They've done it on Starsider a few times, and I think that's a fairly accurate representation of everything. (Even if Tralmek hasn't won anything. *grumbles*) People really get involved in those on SS.

I saw "her" on Bria.

Made me sick to my stomach.

All those shmucks standing around her - what a joke of a game. Just sickening.

To show the level of meathead we're dealing with, I must've seen at least 15 run up and so intelligently proclaim every 2 seconds:

"Invite plz!"

"Invite plz!"

"Invite plz!"

"Invite plz!"

"Invite plz!"

"Invite plz!"

"Invite plz!"

What got me is that people actually invited them, then. It was like watching 3 year olds throw tantrums over a candy bar. Totally lame.

How anyone running this game can see this happen, and not be appalled enough to womp em in the arse swiftly and thoroughly,is beyond my comprehension.

Distorting the system to make this possible makes this game look VERY cheesy and exploit-ridden.

Well, I can see You-Know-Who getting votes for "Best Service Provider"... granted, it speaks volumes about the state of the game in general, but it does make a twisted and somewhat sad kind of sense.

You know what's worse: we had something like this on Chimaera a few weeks ago (even with a full-blown Awards Ceremony in Tyrena theater), and there was a category for "Best Entertainer" (added as an afterthought by the organisers after some entertainers complained, I might add).

Yep, you guessed it, buffbots got nominated, and quite a few of them. Was quite an education for me, as I had never heard of any of them, and I pride myself of knowing most true entertainers on Chimaera (of course, there's no contradiction here ). But those bots seemed to have their quite dedicated following. At least none of them won - true, real, life entertainers did, which gives me at least a bit of hope- but one pair of buffbots came in second, which in itself is an insult...

It is very sad.

But then this is what SWG has become. A game full of bots servicing a few players. if you do not have one or two bots you will suffer and not be a s 'great' as the others. After all, as we have seen from the jedi craze, the community in this game is all about being uber, and will do anything to achieve this goal, having no ethics.

Never do they ask, "is this the right thing to do?" they just ask themselves if it will make their char stronger.

Is it against the rules, or intent of the devs, never crosses their mind. In fact it then becomes widely accepted and the practice of underling bots becomes generally accepted and a MUST have.

Doctor buffs are apparently a must have in this game.

Musician/dancer buffs are apparently a must have in this game

DOT weapons are apparently a must have in this game

Master of profession or defense stacker template is a must have in this game

People are sheep. If somebody credible came out tomorrow and said master entertainer is worth getting because it gives uber bonuses tomorrow we would have 700 people trying to see how fastest to get it.

the game is no longer about the game. It is about trying to beat a game that has no way to beat it. The community is flawed in that thought, as being uber brings you nothing more than not being uber, yet there is some sort of thought out there that it does.

In fact i would argue that not being uber brings you much more satisfaction than being uber.

However, the being uber crowd tends to be the crowd that visits the boards the most (seeking out more info on the latest uber techs) and vote for their favorite service players. Thus the buffbots get more votes than anybody else. Their uberness does not think of anybody but themselves and their immediate friends (after all in some very limited cases in order to be uber you do need one or two other uber players).

Personally the majority of the SWG community disgusts me. the selfish attitude that comes out so very often is appalling and I have never seen the like anywhere else. I have seen whining that this profession is uber, or that profession is the suxx0rs. But never have i seen such a blatent disrespect for people as i have in this game.

There are exceptions as there always are. This forum, the people in it, and generally most entertainers are selfless. I have met a ton of players ingame who are the same way. But sadly that is the minority. For every nice, courteous, generous player i have met there is 5 uber geeks out there. (exaggeration i know).

Everybody being out for themselves is natural. Self preservation is nature's way of saying dont be a dumb butt, However, everybody being out for themselves at whatever cost is against human nature. there would be no society, no civilization if everybody was out for themselves at any cost. It is these people who have no regard for other players at all that create a sense of disgust in me. Why SWG has attracted so many i have no idea, but it truely disgusts me.

I dont dwell on the bad though. I stay in SWG because of the nice people i have met through the little over a year i have played. they are truely great players, and human beings in general. They are what makes a community, they are who deserve awards.

The end of this negative post i will give everybody who reads this long criticizement of the SWG community somethings to think about - and it fits with the holiday season.

how many people do you say thank you to on a daily basis?

how many people do you say hi to on a daily basis?

how many people outside your close circle of friends do you do the above to?

Ever helped a new player you didnt know out?

Ever dropped whatever it is you were doing to help somebody you didnt know?

Ever thought of somebody else's welfare above your own?

I think it is past time the uber players realized this is a game. It can actually be fun without being uber. It can be fun helping people with no benefit to yourself. it can be fun having no buffs, no armor, and going out with a group of 20 to kill rancors on dath. It can be fun to not be uber, being uber is not a requirement they put on the box (they didnt did they?)

End to my very long rant. It has been coming for a very long time i apologize to any and all i may offend, and to all who even read the entire thing. It is just that the people on bria voting for a buffbot as best service player is a sham and very well may have hurt a service player on bria's feelings. Players who voted for that buffbot are the people who are not thinking of others above themselves, and IMO should be ashamed. but then ethics doesnt count in games - or does it?

SWG isn't alone in all the uber players and ranting. I came from a niche space sim that was nothing but flight. This is an open, non-concenstual PvP game (i.e. anyone can shoot anyone at anytime). The game had 500 players when I started and is now down to about 50 at peak hours. The uber, got to win at all costs, PvP crowd destroyed the game. The boards for that game got so bad that two external boards closed down and finally even the vendor boards removed any and all areas where players could just chat. Every thread was someone complaining about someone else being lame, attacking non-combat ships for no reason, or otherwise arguing. The boards here are fairly lame in comparison to the flame fests that followed a JG thread.

The reason you see so many here is in large part because of the sizeable population of younger players. Starwars has an appeal to a wide range of ages and the younger generation is still learning how to be a social animal.

I think you are right, biranno, in that this game attracts 2 different types of players. Though I would expand that a little.

MMORPG fans, the ones roleplaying and generally having fun with other players, I believe are the majority of players in this game - well atleast were about 8 months ago. They are a silent majority due to being ingame and staying away from the forums. A few come to the forums, post a little, but generally they stay ingame.

Starwars fans. the ones that want to be a part of the universe of starwars.

KOTOR fans. they have played KOTOR and want nothing else but to see thousands of jedi dueling and having a blast.

MMO fans. these are the types of players that want nothing else than to beat other players. They dont care what they have to do to do it, they will do it. Their sole purpose in life is to be the best at kicking other players butts.

Of course there are very large varieties of hybrids of these players. The funny thing is that SOE is trying to cater to all of them, while satisfying none.

the KOTOR fans want everybody to be jedi, they want a ton of jedi running around with their light sticks of doom - while the STARWARS fans want things to be like they were in this time period - jedi running for their lives never showing themselves in public unless it is a desperate situation.

The MMO crowd is more into action less into socializing where the MMORPG is opposite of that.

SOE will never get it right if they continue to try to cater to them all, and unfortunately being a member of the most silent/less heard means we dont get as much attention, and nearly no development time. SOE is not trying to satisfy us as much as the loudest whiners. By the way, how many well known gamers mags have a large roleplaying/socializing following? I think this doesnt help us either.

oh well.

I've always thought that one of the problems with SWG is that it attracts two very disparate types of gamers: the Star Wars fans and the MMORPG fans. Now obviously these are not mutually exclusive, but what you end up with is the hard-core Star Wars fan who's bought every Star Wars game that has ever come out playing along side the hard-core MMORPG player who wants to spend their time role-playing and interacting with other players.

The problem in coming from every other Star Wars game to this oneis the MMO part of it though, and most of the people that bought this game coming from that background find themselves in very unfamiliar territory. Star Wars games of the past have been overwhelmingly action-oriented, as are the movies, so the average Star Wars fan or action game fan is just not going to "get" the MMO concepts. They want to log in and get right to the action that they're used to. They may be usedto requiring services of some other character in order to progress, but they're not used to that other character actually being another player.

In the end, I think it's actually good for the MMO genre as a whole. A lot of people who would otherwise have never tried out an MMO are now addicts (including myself ). But I think this game in particular is never going to recover from or otherwise be free from that group of people who are playing the game for Brand and not for the genre.

So those of us enjoying the social aspects of this game are going to have to live with the fact that an unfortunate majority of the players of this game don't realize that there even ARE social aspects in this game. They're always going to want to log in and get to the action. JTL went a long way towards sating that crowd, but for those of us on the ground, I don't think we'regoing to see a change in the psychology of the populous anytime soon.
