When you are in a public or player owned cantina, theater, or hotel and do /register it marks the building as occupied. Now when someone uses the world map and drops down the list of those buildings from the tree on the right of the map they will see a sun beside that building. This indicates that someone is currently performing there. If no one has registered in a building or leaves the building a moon displays indicating that no one has registered as playing in that facility.

So it doesn't affect you or your performance but it makes it easier for people to find the locations with an entertainer available.
