Thread: Why I'm AFKing my way to master

Im working on Musician right now for one of my last couple "holo-grind" but unlike most people I actually am at my computer the vast majority of the time. I am enjoying talking to people in group.. trying to sift through the various "heal me" "tip me" and "group me" AFK spammers to talk to cantina visitors as well as learning something about the musician profession itself. (I tested dancer for a few weeks in beta, and had some fun back then too)

However, I can reach master in any other profession (except maybe merchant) in the game in less than half the time it takes for musician or dancer.. That alone leads to excessive afking even by people that want to be a Musician or Dancerbecause some people dont want to be "low level" in any profession..they prefer to play it as a master and the grind up just delays their fun.

I think the end of Hologrinding will do away with the majority of the AFKers because there wont really be a benefit to doing the profession at all unless is something you actually want to do.. (sure.. there will still be a *few* buffbots around)

I think this is hopelessly optimistic. There are already far more than a *few* buffbots around and I predict it will worsen after the grinders disappear.

why are you a musician?

if leveling is boring to you so too will master.

The first time because it was the Holo grind search. Not by choice.

The second time on a second character (underway now) because I am looking for emersion. I stay ATK for how ever long I can, and then I do AFK overnight. Why not? I mean really, if the system is there and legal for me to get some xp overnight what is the harm in all honesty?

I want master Musician as a means to generate revenue. On my primary character I had a friend "set me up" and never really worried about money. On my new Character, it is a true JOY that some lady just tipped me 10k..Thatmeans that TONIGHT I can go and buy me some Bio-Cloths to enhance the xp, I hope... (and get rid of this accursed newbie clothes)

Different circumstances, but I will tell you this....AFK people, IMO, will be minimized after the Jedi revamp, but will never go away unless SOE puts measures to stop it. And if they stop AFK in respect to musician in some way, they HAVE to do it across the board, and for the casual gamer who cannot spend 5-10 hours or MORE a day in game, it will decrease their competitiveness. Lets not forget that SOE is trying very hard to keep the game level for ALL playing styles and ages. In that you will always lose something.

Personally, the only way you will ever "win" a war with the afker's is to take measures yourself: Like do not allow AFKers in the group, or make a macro saying something like "Please tip the real Entertainers who are HERE for you..." or something.

To restate, I believe when the holo grind is GONE, you will see alot of bandwagon Entertainers jump ship. Then the people who are in it for the profession will rise to the top and AFKing will NOT be near as rampant. Although I believe alot, like me, will AFK while sleeping, thus, it will never die.

Just some thoughts from a guy whose perspective is slightly changing now from grind to emersion...

Hey, I've gotta say, that when I began readng this thread, I was very strongly in favor of AFK macroing... 1) You could create pleasant patterns, 2) YOu don't have to type flourish after flourish , 3) I choose to live in a fairly unpopulated zone (Mos Meca, Tatooine) because of my lack of memory; fellow musicians/entertainers are rare, so XP = slow, 4) People in the cantina where I work aren't very social/appreciative/well-paying...

But, performing is all about keeping people's mindsoff of battle, or so I used to think... but at this moment, noone finds cantinas fun, it's just useful as arecharge and go. The leveling up people seem to have fun, but because of the antisocial nature of my location, leveling up was a monotonous process. Plus, it seems that most entertainers just "want" to be solo afkers...

So, what are the ways to remedy this, besides worrying about afk... I don't think that deleting macros is the answer. Macros are very helpful to the typed-ly challenged, and they can make great patterns. I think the best way to remedy this specific situation is to create some sort of searchable base of performers, like the want ads in a paper. Is there any way that we could submit our name, level, and band desire to a machine vendor and have it be accessible like that?

IE:

you email/submit to a vendor

godot

entertainer

0201

create a small band; 2 musicians with equal or higher ranks

then, this translates to

****************************************************

| request |profession|rank | price|

==============================================

|create a small band, 2 musici...|entertainer|0201| 99999999999|

****************************************************

cantina owners could also put requests for bands to play.

and then, entertainers (or anyone)can access these vendors, see the names, and contact them... it increases the fun, the experience, the likelyhood of $$...

was this worth your read? did all of this make sense? don't want to make a bad first impression here...

QGodot,

Welcome to the boards

Hey, very good first post. I would love to see something like you are suggesting. However, and I could be wrong, I think that items on the Bazaar are all database items and you would have to create a database entry for services along with all the specifics like you mentioned.

Perhaps we could have implemented an actual ingame message board for people to post requests. It would not be as large a database as the Bazaar database, and they could actually make the terms to sit into NPC AND Player owned cantinas as well as theatres and "hotels".

Excellent suggestion, ya might want to slap it in the new ideas thread, I certainly like it. And there is nothing thats impossible, we just haven't figured out a way to do it yet

One idea that could work for this now is to make a slitherhorn, and name it "Looking for Band!", put that on the bazaar for 6000 credits, and add your info in the Seller's Comments section for the bazaar listing. It may not get the high traffic, but someone or someones may see it. Because it's a slitherhorn, it'll get filed under musical instruments, so the theory is that other (probably leveling) musicians would be the ones looking there.

Just an idea... couldn't hurt.

Not sitting at the computer while you are leveling your character in any profession is, IMHO, the cheap and easy way out. You do not "learn" about your class and its almost as if someone has handed you something that you don't deserve, yet you will take it anyhow.

I agree with many of your sentiments Cudayn, but I have to take issue with one statement. I'd argue that, unfortunately, there's not all that much to learn about the musician profession. Don't get me wrong, I'd *LOVE* for there to be more to learn. But as it is, you don't learn much more from the X number of hours between skill boxes than you do from the first hour per skillbox.
I very much enjoy what I can learn, and what I have learned. I just took the approach that when I'm home, at the computer, I'll play around with things, and when I'm asleep or at work I'll let my character continue progressing. What I miss in the meantime I'll learn when I get back.
I did make Master Musician last night, and have no plans to ever leave the profession behind. I'll be enjoying what there is left to learn, and how to work with bandmembers to put together some great shows. Maybe even start up my own cantina.

Actually, I wouldn't say that learning the ins and outs of musicianis the primary benefit to doing the profession at the keyboard. If I had chosen to do the hologrind, and had known anything about how social professions should be utilized, I would have done Entertainer, Dancer, and Musician first and I would have finished up with Image Designer. Why oh why would I do this? Because when you socialize with your customers as an entertainer, you learn all sorts of things about their lives, their professions, their bugs. You learn what things to do first when leveling that profession, and you know what things to stay away from. As an entertainer, you can use that information yourself, or you can spread it around and help customers who come in. I learned more about the other professions as a Musician than I ever did with my Artisan/Merchant/Doctor. I would do Image Design last because one thing people don't talk about much is their armor, but when the two of you are stuck together for 10 minutes, for their stat migration, there really isn't anything else to talk about except why they're getting the stat migration: They want to wear their new ub3r 1337armor. As an ID I have learned more than I ever wanted to know about armors.

So, I know this was a round about way of saying it, but there are other things to learn with Musician (and other entertainer professions) than just how to use the music commands.

There are other things to learn too like what instruments sound best on what songs, and what /flos sound good on what instruments on what songs, etcetera.

Well, let's add to this a bit. I agree that if your idea of a good song is /flo 1; /flo2; /flo 3; /flo 4;... repeat, then no, there's not a lot to learn asyou levelmusician. You can certainly AFK your way to Master doing this. But I think that a lot more can be done with even the somewhat limiting music system we have in game, if we just put our creative minds to it. This is what makes the difference between great musicians and those who just have some master'stitle that says they have enough XP to wear it.

Anyone with the music skill boxes can play the music. It takes someone who's really learned the profession to find ways to make the same old songs more interesting, and build structures to the tunes, and do a better show. These are thetrue masters of the profession. XP can't teach you that, there's no way to AFK creativity. Sure, you can always just start learning how towrite musicafter you get that so-coveted Master tag.Or you could learn the songs as you go, enjoy the hell out of the process, and build your real musician and songwritingskills progressively. I think there's a lot more available to do when leveling in music than many people recognize.

Aleyo, I completely agree with you. Dancers can group and each of them can dance at their highest level, but musicians are always tied to the lowest level musician in the group. This is so incredibly unfair, and so overwhelmingly boring, that getting to Master Musician should only be done AFK/Macroing, simply to protest the shoddy treatment that we have always received from the devs. I love music (good music), and playing star wars 1 or rock for WEEKS at a time is enough to drive me into an overt combat profession, just to get rid of the frustration (and, by the way, I would be really really bad at combat). I really enjoy having my master musician, and will travel out to outlying planets just to play for the fun of it. Luckily I have sufficient money for anything I need, so it really is just for the fun of it.

More variety - I just got my first entertainer droid. Most people seem to use theirs just for effects, but I've loaded mine up with a few Ommni Box tracks, and have started experimenting with the 64 possible combinations (times however many songs) of:

/bandflourish x; /flourish y;

E.g. in Jazz, with me on the Chid, /ba 2; /flo 1; is really sweet.

I started out the game with my main character as a master musician/master entertainer, leveled ATK. I eventually gave it up to pursue other, more violent professions. Once in a while though I wish I could still whip out my old Nalargon, but in the process of becoming a doctor/fencer I seem to have totally forgotten how to play it. So, for those times I feel like jamming, I've created a new character on a different server to use when I feel like entertaining. However, I'm spoiled. I'm used to being a master, playing whatever instrument I wanted. It sucks to only know 3 songs and 2 instruments. So Yes, I will be AFKing this new character to master. I do understand what a blight AFKing is to the entertainment community, so I will be as unobnoxious about it as possible. Once I have achieved master, I will only play ATK, and I will be social and I will entertain. Right now I'm just grinding XP to get the tools needed to put on a good show.

I had a Force sensitive character, with 23 and a half boxes ground out.
I had a master creature handler.
I had a high lvl crafter character.
I had a Bounty Hunter that I hunted PC Jedi with.

My game is dead.
