Yes. Yes, it is. But, only if you don't really want to learn the Nalargon.
Here's the thing. For the low, low price of only 63 skill points, you can get all but two of the instruments and all but two of the songs (Novice Entertainer, Musicianship 1-4, EntHealing 1-4, Novice Musician, Music Knowledge 1-4). If you really want to do other things in the game, you can stop there and use the majority of your skill points on other things. You don't NEED to go for Master Entertainer any more than you need to take the two Healing disciplines in Musician. Now, if you do that, you'll have a lot of horns. Six different horns, playing two sounds. Plus, the Bandfill and Ommni, both of which sound the same. While the Bandfill is a fun instrument, there'll be quite a few people who take it. I was in a group the other night that had four Bandfills, just because it was the first non-horn instrument most people could get.
But, let's say you're not happy with just those horn/drum sounds. You want one of the two truly unique instrument sounds. Your options:
> Taking Master Entertainer would cost you an additional 34 points, but'd give you some dancing ability and some neat Image Design skills. You can reach this box pretty quickly.
> Taking Master Musician would cost you an additional 43 points, but give you some instrument schematics, some visual effects, and you'd heal people much more quickly. This box takes much longer to reach.
Doing both raises your total to 140 skill points. That's a lot, and it doesn't really help you in the long run; you'll still only be able to play one instrument at a time. Limiting yourself to one or the other keeps the cost in the 100-110 range, which still leaves more than half of your points available for combat or crafting skills.
Without either one of the Master boxes, you won't have any sort of distinctive sound. There will always be a few people with horns, and several higher people with Bandfills or Ommnis, but Mandoviol and Nalargon players will NEVER be as common, just because of the large number of additional skill points needed. If anything, I'd say that the Mandoviol is more desirable than a Nalargon for quite a few reasons, but maybe that's just me.

The mandoviol is cool but it's not worth wasting the skill points if Master Entertainer is not your main goal. If you are going for Musician then you will only whip out the mandoviol on occassion and play it for a couple of minutes before you get tired of seeing the low XP gains.
Of course once you are MM, xp gains are void anyway.
