Echinacea, you don't like the nalargon on Star Wars 3? I think it sounds pretty cool on that tune. I like the sound on SW1 and Virtuoso too. I do wish it didn't sound like a metal drum so often.

i always play the bandfill (would play ommni but the stupid targeting) unless i am playing in a band which i use the nala then, or if i am playing waltz or virtuoso which i play the chicken(chindakulu) horn.

the beat is what makes a song, and if you dont have one of those playing your song doesnt sound as good. unless going for the kenny g sound of waltz or virtuoso as mentioned above.

but overall i LOVE the nalargon. it is the only musician instrument that has its own sound. (mandovial is also unique but is not a musician's instrument) also the flourishes on it look good (esp #7). if the piano sound was more frequent and less steel drum i would play it more often. also the piano sound was so in the face in virtuoso it would be better. i would enjoy a more piano-esc sound overall.

Mine is pretty close to NewJedi's..

Star Wars 1 - mando or nalargon - Completely agree, though both do much better with a ommni/bandfill to back it.

Rock - ommni/bandfill - I'll add narlagon here as well.

Star Wars 2 - chid horn - What else?

Folk - chid horn - Yep

Star War 3 - nalargon - .... you know, I'm not sure I have a favorite for this song, I like em all! Narlagon is just fun to jam on, ommni/bandfill has a good beat, chid sounds good, and Traz gets quite jazzy on this one. Mandoviol is just ok though. Narlagon and ommni/bandfill are about equal for me.

Ceremonial - mando - Yeah I'll have to agree, but again I like all the instruments on this one. Well, the narlagon doesn't sound great but it isn't bad.

Ballad - chid horn - Hmm, yeah I'll have to agree.

Waltz - chid horn - Yep, and a good beat makes it all that better

Jazz - chid horn - Jazz my favorite is actually ommni/bandfill. Of course part of that is I think it makes a great act to dress dancers up in suits, give em a staff and have them dance poplock so they twirl the staff. The bass beat for that just rules.

Virtuoso - chid horn or nalargon - All the way.

If the Narlagon is my least favorite instrument, StarWars3 is probably my least favorite song. (Well, except for StarWars1...but I try not to acknowledge that that one even exists.)

I'll give it a try tonight when I get home, though.

Oh I love SW3! I used to dislike it, but my musician advances *really* slow so I've spent some time getting to learn SW3 a lot better and now I really enjoy it. I have the most fun if I think of it being like a jazz improv, let the base tune go for a couple bars then do a group of flourishes like it's your turn to solo. I always end my 'solos' with either flo 7 or 8 because to me they sound more cadential then the rest-I reserve them for closing and use the others to make the 'meat' of my little solos.

Ok on topic:

SW1 mandoviol for sure.

Any song, probably omni/bandfill-just having that bass line adds SO much.

I like the nalargon a lot too but no so much the sound of it as the animation of the flourishes.

Oh ho, ho, ho now,

The Mandovil sounds very nice on SW3. I play it solo quite a bit, it has a very electric violin/viola sound to it and speaking of eerie, thats what "I" think the Mandovil brings to the table on that song.......

But thats just me, the Mando lover

I'm going to assume you are referring to the Traz on starwars3. The thing I love about starwars3 is that each instrument adds a bit of a different bit to the song. The Traz adds a nice jazzy bit of horn, the chid adds a bit of eerie march, the ommni box adds a nice beat... About the only one I don't think really adds to the song is the mandoviol.
