Thread: What's a Fair Cover Charge?

My problem with the cover charge is I can't be sure who is listening to me, and who paid what. It seems automated and impersonal. When I get a normal tip, I always say thanks, but when I get a covercharge paid, I can't even do that. I want to be able to negotiate, but setting a covercharge makes me feel like a dispenser NPC, and not a real person.

Obviously if you had a post that was deleted, it was a moderatable offense. Yeah you're entitled to your opinion, but you're not entitled to be offensive about it. I'm probably glad I missed whatever post of your's that got deleted, considering your immature response above.

I am with Sneev. I think by charging a cover charge you are letting go some higher income. When I perform in the MO I get tips ranging from 1k to 10k. If I set a cover charge for like 1k I would probably make less money. If I was on my combat player and paid a cover charge to watch an entertainer I would feel less inclined to tip them more money. I've always felt like you need to hustle to get tips, greet everyone, tell jokes, engage the audience, all of this I find increases my tips. All the cover charge does I think is ensure that an AFK entertainer will get more money, because people will pay it if the only ent in the room is AFK. It would be nice if they could turn off the cover charge when the AFK tag goes up, but oh well. I do AFK for short periods of time, but certainly dont expect tips. I usually only leave my toon running to keep the music going for the group, and only when I know I will be back soon. It is as bad as AFK ents macro spamming for tips. So, I think it is a fine option if you are getting a lot of customers, aren't feeling outgoing, and just want to make some money.

The majority of people will tip you more than I would ever charge. A good example is when I am doing ID work. I did two different ID sessions on one guy. I would have charged him less than 5k for both. More likely than not it would have been 1k per session. When all was said and done I came away 20k richer, the guy paid 10k for each session.

That being said I do think the cover charge ability is a very good thing and a step in the right direction. This gives us the ability to have control over ourselves. It will be abused but at least it shows we have someone paying attention to us at least a little bit.

Cover charges make me feel like an Inspiration buff vendor. An NPC. Far too impersonal, and nothing that anyone (that I'm aware of) requested.

We've asked for more things to do in the cantina for ages. We've asked to have our professions saved from being PC NPC's.

We have the following, which require no action on the part of the "Entertainer," which essentially turn us into efficient little PC NPC's:

1. Totally passive buffing.

2. A pop-up requiring no action by the Entertainer. Pay and get your buffs.

I'm sorry to put it this way, but the above 2 things are what cause me to feel that the Devs want us to be NPC's. And I, for one, find it disgusting.

I understand there are people who want some control over who gets buffed by them. The solution is ACTIVE buffing, not passive NPC-style buffing. Problem #1 with our "new world." Problem #2 was trying to justify the passive buffing by giving us this "cover charge." It turned us into vendors, essentially.

I do not, and I will not, use cover charge. I have nothing against those who do, necessarily. There are a few ways to use this effectively and properly. But there is an even greater opportunity to abuse this function and set up an Entertainer as a buffing NPC, essentially. Without all that pesky macro stuff that buffbots couldn't seem to get right, so they had to come into our forums asking for help.

Myconcern is that the Devs sure seem HELL BENT on providing an easy-to-use, hassle-free, and consumer friendly Inspiration buff PC NPC. And I find it unacceptable.

If this is their way of encouraging people to PLAY Entertainers, boy are they misguided, and boy are we in trouble.

Making it easier to buffbot does not = encouraging ATK play. Somebody might want to tell them that.

How about we actually get some content, hmmmm? How about we actually get an ELITE skill worth anything, hmmm? I'm tired of staring at my obsolete Mind enhancement skill.

Does the cover charge work for the group? In other words if I set a cover charge, does the customer have to pay when they click to listen or watch anyone in the group? If that was the case it could be cool for troupes looking to host shows in player cantinas or public cantinas. An easy way to sell tickets in a sense. Especially if the cover charge could be group split.

It doesn't, it's on a per-character basis. You can always of course coordinate with your group to set the same cover charge, and use /splitCredits amount when you get tipped.

I charge 300 creds cover, its not too much or too little. Outside the occasional friend that drops by the cantina and knows of my lack of getting paid I can honestly say I wasn't tipped in over 4 months, and I'm ATK to interact with people probably 98% of the time, the2% are emergencies. Society has no appreciation for the arts, its clear when you have people paying to see sporting events in the hundreds of dollars for a ticket yet won't pay 20 to see an art gallery or other haute culture. Go figure, watch others have fun doing something or get inspiration to do something yourself and use your imagination, I rest my case.

I do not intend to use the covercharge.I spend most of the time playing in my own cantina and for my guildmates so that defeats the purpose of helping them.Of course my cantina is open to all andI am registered when iIplay so all knowI am therecan benefit from that.

However,I can see the use of covercharges in NPC cantina's and it really is a personal choice.I personally would not charge more then 500 since that appears to be an affordable amount even for new players who run a couple of delivery missions. If you want more money then 500I suggste you run a few Entertainer missions as they can net you 1200 easy.

But I have to agree with those who say that interaction is the key. If you talk to people and get to know them tips will far outweigh covercharges or Entertainer missions.

Cheers!

Myself I will not listen to anyone with a covercharge.

I prefer to listen and then tip, a lot depends on the effort that went into the song, how the person welcomed or spoke to me. Too many times I walk in to see covercharges and not even a hello. I will move on to another cantina and hope I find someone live and playing well planed out music.

and also myself I will not charge a covercharge, I could not for battle fatigue and see little reason to charge for this.
